MIDDLETOWN, Conn. – The Tufts men's hockey team continued their month-long road trip Friday night, and picked up a 3-1 win over Welseyan. Goals from junior tri-captain Stewart Bell, senior tri-captain Blake Edwards and freshman Brian Brown, and a solid game in net from sophomore Mason Pulde, helped the Jumbos avenge the loss they suffered to the Cardinals to open up this season.
The Jumbos move to 6-8-1 overall with a 3-5-1 conference mark. With the loss the Cardinals fall to 2-13, and 1-8 in league play. The Jumbos have not played a game at home since the December 5/6 NESCAC weekend back before the holiday break, but are also 3-2 on that stint so far.
Bell opened up the scoring with just over four minutes remaining in the first period. The junior received a pass from behind the net from senior Andrew White, and was able to unleash a shot. The first one didn't go in, but Bell found the back of the net off the rebound with his second try to give the Jumbos a 1-0 lead. The tally was Bell's fifth of the season.
Just over six minutes into the second period Edwards gave the Jumbos a 2-0 lead with his third goal of the year. White picked up his second assist of the night and sophomore Sean Kavanagh was also credited with a helper on the goal. Edwards has now scored in the Jumbos last three games.
That second Jumbo goal sent Wesleyan sophomore keeper Dawson Sprigings to the bench in exchange for junior net minder Nolan Daley. Springings made 10 saves in his 26:36 in net.
It was Wesleyan who would score next to cut the lead to one as sophomore Robbie Harbison scored off the rebound of sophomore James Kline's shot. Freshman Dylan Holze was also credited with an assist on the goal at 16:46 through the second period.
The last Jumbo goal came off the stick of Brown, who launched the puck from his own blue line into the empty Wesleyan net with just :00.2 remaining on the clock. The goal was his team-leading ninth of the season.
Pulde finished the night with 35 saves, 18 in the first period alone. Daley collected 17 saves during his 32:09 between the pipes.
Neither team was able to take advantage of the power play opportunity, as the Jumbos were 0-2 and the Cardinals were 0-3 with the one-man advantage. The Cardinals finished with the edge in shots, 36-30.
The Jumbos will be back in action on Saturday when they take on #5 Trinity at 4:00 pm. The Cardinals also take the ice in NESCAC action on Saturday, hosting Connecticut College.
