OSWEGO, N.Y. – The Tufts men's hockey team closed out play in the PathFinder Bank Oswego Classic on Saturday, falling to St. Scholastica in the consolation game of the tournament hosted by Oswego State University.
The Saints got on the board first as Dave Williams found the back of the net halfway through the first period. That would be the score at the first intermission.
St. Scholastica's Matt Malenstyn made it 2-0 St. Scholastica five minutes into the second period. A little over two minutes later, Derek Sutliffe gave the Saints a 3-0 advantage. Michael Spring and Williams had the assists. Steven Phee scored his third goal in the past two days to finish the scoring in the period as CSS led 4-0 at the second intermission. Derek Hills and Dylan Nowakowski were credited with the assists.
A total of seven goals would be scored in the third period, five of which by the Saints. Luke Simpson scored twice in the period. Sutliffe added his second, Brandon Millin had a tally and Josh Hansen scored the final goal of the contest, short-handed, to give the Saints the 9-2 victory.
The Jumbos received two goals in the third period, both coming from freshman Scott Majowski. Senior Tyler Voigt picked up an assist on the first goal, which was on a power play, while rookie Dan Kelly assisted on the second goal.
The Saints out-shot the Jumbos 33-22 and held Tufts to 1-for-5 on the power-play. Corey Kopphad a shutout going until the final four minutes of the game where he allowed the pair of goals. Koop finished with 20 saves in the victory. Freshmen Ryan McConnell and Ross Bendetson split the time between the pipes for the Jumbos. McConnell finished with 14 saves while Bendetson finished with ten saves.
The Saints (8-5-0) will be at Saint Mary's University next Friday with puck drop scheduled for 7:00 p.m. The Jumbos will be back in action on Saturday, January 10 when they travel to Suffolk for a 7:00 pm contest.
