MALDEN, Mass. – The #11/14 William's College men's hockey team used two third period goals to earn a 4-2 win over the Tufts Jumbos at the Malden Forum on Saturday afternoon. The loss snapped a four game home winning streak for the Jumbos.
For Williams (12-4-2, 8-3-1 NESCAC), who was ranked #11 in the most recent USCHO.com national poll and #14 in the D3hockey.com poll, the win comes after a 3-1 loss at Connecticut College on Friday night. The Jumbos (7-10-1, 4-7-1 NESCAC) beat Middlebury, who was receiving votes in both polls, on Friday night, 2-1.
The Ephs were able to get on the board first when senior David Jarrett unleashed a slap shot just inside the blue line that soared past the right shoulder of Tufts sophomore goalie Mason Pulde to give the visitors the 1-0 advantage with just under four minutes remaining in the first frame. The goal was Jarrett's third of the year, and junior Zander Masucci was credited with the helper.
The Jumbos would score the equalizer a little more than a minute and a half later when junior tri-captain Stewart Bell unleashed a shot, and senior tri-captain Andrew White was able to get his stick on it to sneak it past the Wiliams' net minder off the rebound for his fourth goal of the season, evening the score at one.
The second period saw two goals scored again, one by each team. Just under four minutes into the second period Eph sophomore Sam Gray was sent to the penalty box for holding, and it took the Jumbos just eight seconds to capitalize on the one-man advantage. Sophomore Sean Kavanagh scored his fourth goal of the season with assists from freshman Brian Brown and senior Tyler Voigt.
Williams evened the score at two with 11 minutes remaining in the second period when Jarrett rifled a shot towards the net that sophomore Tyler Young deflected past Pulde for the Eph's second score of the game. The goal was Young's fourth of the season, and freshman Dan Doherty was also credited with an assist.
In the third period it was just the Ephs who were able to score. They took the 3-2 lead 3:12 into the third period when sophomore James McNamara fired a shot at the goal that deflected off the stick of classmate Sam Gray. It was Gray's third goal of the season, and in addition to McNamara, senior Alex DeBaere also picked up an assist on the score.
Nine minutes into the third period the Jumbos had their best chance to tie the game when Eph senior Craig Kitto was sent to the penalty box for slashing, but the Jumbos weren't able to score with the advantage and the Ephs kept the lead.
Pulde left the net with 1:10 left on the clock, and 12 seconds later DeBaere scored the Eph's fourth goal of the game with the Jumbo's goal empty. Junior Greg Johnson was credited with the assist for the Ephs. Pulde would leave the net again with 46 seconds remaining, and the Jumbos were able to put some pressure on the Eph defense, but weren't able to score.
Pulde finished with 36 saves for the Jumbos while his Eph counterpart junior Noah Klag had 29 saves in the win. The Jumbos were 1-for-2 on power plays on the afternoon, while the Ephs were not able to score on any of their four power play opportunities. The visitors finished with the advantage in shots, 40-31.
Next up for the Ephs is a home contest against Wesleyan on Friday at 7:00 pm. The Jumbos will be back on their home ice on Friday when they host Connecticut College for a 7:00 pm puck drop.
