Junior Mitchell Black ran DIII's fastest 800 thus far at BU |
BOSTON - Junior Mitchell Black in the 800 meters and the Tufts 4x400-meters relay ran the fastest times in the nation for Division III this season at the John Thomas Invitational hosted by Boston University on Saturday.
Black's time of 1:51.16 was good enough for sixth in the field of 139. In addition to being the best to date in Division III, it will be fast enough to qualify Black for the NCAA Championship. It's just 0.02 of his school-record in the event (1:51.14) set last season.
The 4x4 of junior Veer Bhalla, Black, junior Alex Kasemir and junior Francis Goins put down a 3:18.17 time that is also the nation's best at this point.
Bhalla also took 16th in the 800 with a time of 1:53.28, which is the third-fastest in the nation entering this weekend, but he'll likely have to improve that time in order to qualify for NCAAs.
Goins is in a similar situation after his performance on Saturday, as his time of 22.33 seconds in the 200 currently ranks in the top-five nationally, but he'll have to run even faster to qualify for nationals.
In the 400, freshman Andrew DiMaiti clocked a time of 49.49 to finish 34th of 151 athletes. Kasemir's time of 50.49 was good enough for 68th.
Sophomore Nicholas Usoff was also in action in the 500. He finished 29th of 86 athletes with a time of 1:05.78.
These athletes will rejoin their teammates next weekend as the Jumbos host the Cupid Challenge at the Gantcher Center.
