MIDDLETOWN, Conn. – On the road once again, the Tufts men's hockey team took on rival Wesleyan on Saturday afternoon. The Cardinals scored the game-tying goal with a little over six minutes remaining in the third period, and the two teams ended a five-minute overtime period in a 1-1 tie.
The Jumbos are now 0-1-1 this season after falling to defending national champion, Trinity 3-2, on Friday night. The Cardinals are 0-0-2, after opening their season on Friday night with a tie with Connecticut College.
The Jumbos opened scoring when junior Mike Leary notched his first of the season 5:37 into the second period. Junior Patrick Lackey and classmate Sean Kavanagh were credited with the helpers.
Tufts would take that lead into the third period, but 13:53 through the third period the Cardinal's James Kline tied the game with his first goal of the season. Jay Matthews was credited with the assist.
The Cardinals outshot the Jumbos 47-33, including a 20-7 advantage in shots on goal in the third period alone. The Jumbos were 0-for-2 on power play opportunities while the Cardinals were also not able to score on their one power play chance.
Sophomore Nik Nugnes played all 65 minutes in net for the Jumbos finishing with 46 saves. His Cardinal counterpart, Dawson Sprigings, finished with 32 saves.
The Cardinals take the ice again next Saturday, November 28 when they host Salve Regina. The Jumbos will travel to Becker on Tuesday for a 7:30 pm puck drop.
