Freshman Brandon Jinn won both distance freestyle events for Tufts |
MIDDLEBURY, VT - Senior All-American Michael Winget won three times and a pair of freshmen combined for three victories as the Tufts Men's Swimming & Diving team won a tri-meet at Middlebury College with Connecticut College on Saturday.
Tufts posted a 159-121 victory against Connecticut College and took a 176-112 final score over Middlebury. At last year's NESCAC meet, the Camels were third, the Jumbos were fourth and the Panthers were seventh.
The Jumbos started today's meet in fine fashion with a 1:35.19 victory in the 200 medley relay, two seconds ahead of runner-up Connecticut College. Winget, sophomore Morgan Ciliv, freshman Kingsley Bowen and senior Cam Simko were the foursome.
In addition to that relay win, Winget was first in three individual events. His 50.73 won the 100 backstroke, followed by a 1:54.92 victory in the 200 backstroke and finally a time of 51.30 seconds to take the 100 individual medley.
Freshman Brandon Jinn won both distance freestyle events for Tufts. He swam a 9:49.80 in the 1,000, a time only six swimmers in Tufts history have topped. He later won the 500 freestyle with a 4:47.08 touch.
Bowen is also a highly touted freshman at Tufts. He earned his first collegiate individual victory in the 100 freestyle (48.38). He was also second behind Winget in both the 100 backstroke with a time of 51.83 seconds and the 100 IM in 51.79 seconds.
The most convincing win of the afternoon by Tufts was in the 200 butterfly, where senior Anthony DeBenedetto's 1:54.12 won by a margin of more than six seconds. The Jumbos earned three of the top four spots in that race with sophomore Chris Flynn taking third (2:02.99) and freshman Noah Cagley fourth (2:03.05).
The Jumbo victory count was nine overall as sophomore diver Aaron Idelson won the two-man three-meter competition with a 227.10 score. He tallied 204.30 in the one-meter event.
The Jumbos were also solidly grouped at the front of the pack in the 100 and 200 freestyles. Behind Bowen in the 100 were sophomore Lorenzo Lau in second at 48.88 econds and Simko in fourth at 49.14 seconds. Simko's 1:45 flat in the 200 free led a 2-3-5 Tufts finish that included sophomore Zachary Wallace (1:47.12) and Lau (1:47.48), respectively.
Wallace also had a second in the 200 IM with a 1:59.59 time and a third in the 200 backstroke touching in 1:59.97. Ciliv was third in the 100 breaststroke (1:01.13).
The foursome of sophomore Michael Brienza, Lau, freshman Ross Wood and senior Harry Wood scored third in the 200 freestyle relay which closed the meet with a 1:29.23 time.
The Jumbos compete next at the MIT Invitational on December 4-5.
