MARLBORO, Mass. – Sophomore Brian Brown scored twice and assisted another and the Tufts men's hockey team scored four goal, but it wasn't enough as the Jumbos fell to Becker College Tuesday night at the New England Sports Center.
The Jumbos are now 0-2-1 this season, while the Hawks move to 2-5 with the win .
The Hawks had ten different players tip the stat sheet. Senior Tyler Auricchio (Henderson, Nev) led the Hawks with 2 goals and an assist, while sophomore Corey Sherman potted a pair, including the game winner early in the third period. Freshman Collin Edwards (Winchester, Mass.) had three helpers and Bryan Canter earned his first collegiate win.
Auricchio scored the first goal of the game at the 7:02 mark when Edwards spotted the senior wide open in the slot for his first goal of the season and an early 1-0 lead. Tufts evened the score with 6:34 remaining on the clock. After a Hawks turnover in the neutral zone, the Jumbos senior Stewart Bell found an open Nick Flanagan on the left wing for the Tufts' marker. Just two minutes later, Auricchio notched his second goal of the game off another assist from Edwards to give the Hawks the 2-1 lead at intermission.
The Jumbos scored a shorthanded goal just over a minute into the second frame when junior Patrick Lackey poked in an unassisted score to tie the game at two. The Hawks responded with back-to-back goals from Sherman and Conner Allison (Hillsboro, Ore.). First Sherman would sneak out of the corner and tuck the puck past Tufts' sophomore netminder Ryan McConnell, and then Allison would give the hosts a two goal cushion midway through the period. However, Tufts wouldn't back down as Brown would tally a duo of goals in forty-four seconds to close out the frame knotted at 4-4, setting up Sherman's heroics in the last period.
Junior Gerald Owen (Chesapeake, VA) added an insurance goal for the Hawks at 7:48 of the third period to seal the 6-4 victory.
The Jumbos outshot the Hawks, 44-35. Both teams were not able to convert on any of their three power play opportunities. Canter finished with 40 saves in the win for the Hawks, while McConnell made 15 saves through 30:46. Junior Mason Pulde played the last 27:50 and made 14 save in relief, and picked up the decision in net.
The Hawk return to the ice for non-conference action on Saturday, Nov. 28 at 4:30 p.m. They will tackle Assumption College in the first round of the Worcester City Shootout. The Jumbos travel to Vermont for the Castleton State Tournament starting Friday November 27th. They face off with Western New England College at 3:45 pm.
