BRUNSWICK, Maine – The Tufts men's ice hockey team used a goal with under three minutes remaining to break the scoreless stalemate with Bowdoin on Friday night, going on to win 2-0. Junior Mason Pulde picked up the shutout in net for the Jumbos, making 29 saves in the wining effort.
The Jumbos (2-4-2, 1-3-1 NESCAC) collect their first conference victory of the season, while dropping the Polar Bears to 3-5-1 (1-3-1 NESCAC).
Things were pretty even in the game until the Jumbos were able to break open the scoring late in the third period. Each goalie stopped eight shots in the first period to keep both teams off the board.
Pulled came through with many key stops during the contest, including a promising wraparound by Bowdoin's Sebastian Foster late in the second period. Matt Sullivan blocked a Tufts shot at the blue line and collected the puck off his body to earn a breakaway into Jumbo territory, but Pulde was able to keep the contest locked at zero.
Freshman Ryan Wolter set up the game-winning goal for Tufts with a shot from the left point. Senior co-captain Stewart Bell deflected the incoming puck from the far post to best Polar Bear net minder Peter Cronin and score the first goal of the evening with 2:58 remaining in the third period. Sophomore Chad Goldberg added an insurance empty-netter in the final minute, flipping in a shot on net from in front of the Tufts bench.
Pulled stopped all 29 shots he faced to earn his first shutout of the season, while his Polar Bear counterpart made 20 stops. Bowdoin held the advantage in shots, 29-22. The Polar Bears went 0-for-6 on the power play, while Tufts converted on one of the team's two man-up opportunities.
The Polar Bears host Connecticut College tomorrow afternoon at 4 pm. The Jumbos will take the ice again on Saturday as well as they travel up to Colby for a 3 pm contest.
