WATERVILLE, Maine -- Colby College tied the game with 2:21 left in the second period and both teams went scoreless in the third period and overtime in a 2-2 tie between the Mules and Tufts University in NESCAC men's hockey Saturday at Alfond Rink.
Both teams had 1-0-1 weekends heading into the holiday break. Colby moved to 3-3-2 overall and 2-3-1 in the league, while the Jumbos are 2-4-3 overall and 1-3-2 in conference play.
Tufts had two leads in the opening period. With a two-man advantage thanks to Colby hooking and elbowing penalties, the Jumbos went about one minute until senior Dominic Granato scored his first of the season by shooting over sprawled out goalie Emerson Verrier. Rookies Nick Balboa and Clay Berger had the assists at 6:52.
Colby's Michael Rudolf scored his third goal of the season with eight minutes to play from a fifth assist of the year from Jack Burton and the first from Kai Frankville. On the power play after a charging call on Tufts, Rudolf stuffed home a rebound off the boards.
The Jumbos took their second lead just 2:30 after the Colby goal. With a face-off to Verrier's left, Granato won the draw back to freshman David Lackner, who immediately ripped a shot for his third goal of the year.
The Mules added their second power play goal when Cam MacDonald scored after a Tufts boarding penalty. MacDonald scored on an open net rebound, with assists going to EJ Rauseo and Michael Decker.
Nik Nugnes made 15 of his 38 saves in the opening period for Tufts. Verrier stopped 22 shots for the Mules.
The Jumbos will now take a break for the holiday and will be back in action on January 6 when they host Daniel Webster at 7 pm.
