CAMBRIDGE - Senior tri-captain Michael Winget swam an NCAA B cut time in the 200 backstroke as the Tufts Men's Swimming & Diving team competed on the third and final day of the MIT Invitational Sunday.
Winget's 1:49.80 finished second at the meet, just eight-tenths of a second behind race winner Adam Betts from NYU (1:49 flat). Winget's time was well within the 1:51.73 NCAA B mark. The Jumbo All-American also posted a 1:55.97 to take third in the 200 individual medley final later on Sunday.
Tufts freshman Brandon Jinn swam a 4:37.83 in the 500 freestyle for third place, making him the third-fastest Jumbo in team history. Senior tri-captain Cam Simko was seventh in the event at MIT with a 4:40.88 finish.
Sophomore Zachary Wallace was strong on Sunday with leading Tufts performances in the 100 butterfly and 200 individual medley. The 51.58 he swam in the 100 butterfly, 11th at the meet, was his personal best. In the 200 IM, he recorded a 1:55.94 in the preliminaries and was fifth in the final at 1:56.58.
The Jumbos earned seven top-eight places on Sunday including the relays. The 200 medley group of Winget, sophomore Morgan Ciliv, freshman Kingsley Bowen and Simko compiled a good 1:33.66 for sixth place. Sophomore James McElduff, Bowen, Simko and sophomore Lorenzo Lau were also sixth at 3:09.31 for the 400 freestyle relay.
Also on Sunday, Ciliv's 2:12.27 time in the 200 breaststroke was ninth at the meet. Lau timed 47.11 seconds in the 100 freestyle.
Head coach Adam Hoyt's Jumbos totaled 833 points at the meet to score third out of six teams. Host MIT won with a 1,624.5 score and NYU was second at 1230.
