BOSTON - The 2015 Tufts University men's indoor track & field team's 4x400-meter relay ran the fastest time in school history by a shade with a 3:15.34 at the New England Intercollegiate Amateur Athletic Assocation Championships hosted by Boston University on Saturday.
The Tufts foursome of freshman Andrew DeMaiti, junior Alex Kasemir, junior Mitchell Black and junior Francis Goins combined on the time, which was fourth out of 25 entrants in the event. That scored five team points for Tufts.
The finish is 0.01 faster than the previous school mark of 3:15.35 that Black, Kasemir, Goins and graduated teammate Graham Beutler ran last season.
Converted to a 3:18.47 due to the banked track at BU, the time ranks the Jumbo 4x4 sixth nationally at the moment.
Also on Saturday, junior Veer Bhalla scored three points for Tufts with a sixth-place finish in the 800 final. He recorded a 1:54.36 time. Bhalla had qualified for the final on Friday with a 1:52.54 that was seventh in the preliminaries, earning him one of eight spots into Saturday's final. Neither time improved upon his 10th-ranked national time of 1:53.90 in the event.
With eight points scored, Tufts placed 22nd at the meet featuring Division I, II and III competition. The Jumbos were eighth among DIII teams.
Several season-best times were run at the meet. On Saturday, junior James Traester finished the 3K in 8:34.56 for 12th out of 28. Saturday's 4x800 relay also had Tufts' 2015 best of 7:46.69, run by freshmen Tom DePalma, Peter McCawley and Ty Enos along with junior Alex Apostolides. That was 11th at the meet.
On Friday, the distance medley relay ran a Tufts season-best time of 10:20.33 that was 14th at the meet. The group was freshman Sam Little, freshman Chris Gregory, senior Sam Garfield and senior Marshall Pagano.
