Box Score HAMPTON, Va. – Castleton's Dan Errico singled up the middle with two outs driving home two runs in the top of the 10th to lift the Spartans to a 6-4 win over Tufts Baseball on Friday. The game was the Jumbos' 2015 season opener.
Reliever TJ Fearon came on for Castleton in the bottom of the 10th and set the Jumbos down 1-2-3 to pick up the save. The Spartans improved to 4-2 with their fourth straight victory.
Tufts had led 4-1 after scoring three times in the bottom of the sixth. Junior DH Bryan Egan hit a one-out single and stole second. Junior SS Matt Moser's single sent Egan to third and then freshman 3B Tommy O'Hara doubled to left field scoring Egan. Junior LF Cody McCallum followed with an infield single scoring Moser and then senior 1B James Howard's infield out plated O'Hara.
The Spartans rallied to tie it with two in the seventh and one in the eighth. With the bases loaded and two outs, Castleton scored twice on wild pitches to pull within 4-3 in the seventh. In the eighth, Errico's infield single with two outs scored Tyler Lord who had led off the inning with a single to right, stole second and went to third on a ground out.
O'Hara hit a one-out double for the Jumbos in the bottom of the eighth, but did not score.
The Spartans had struck first in the third when Lord singled up the middle scoring Jimmy Buckley, who had led off with a single. Tufts tied it in the fifth when McCallum was hit by a pitch to lead off and scored on a single from senior CF Connor McDavitt.
Ericco went 3 for 5 with three rbis and a run to lead Castleton. Lord finished 2 for 4 with two runs and an rbi atop the Castleton line-up. Matt Ravey earned the win in relief, going 3.1 innings allowing two hits and no runs.
O'Hara was 2 for 3 in his collegiate debut for the Jumbos. Senior Tom Ryan look the loss in relief.
The teams will go at it again later today in a 5 pm start.
