HAMPTON, VA - In game two against Castleton, Tim Superko and Speros Varnos combined for a three-hit shutout as Tufts defeated Castleton 3-0 on Friday afternoon.
Superko was masterful in his eight innings allowing two hits and striking out eight to get the win. Varnos struck out two and allowed one hit in the ninth inning for the save.
The Jumbos got on the board in the second inning with one out as junior SS Matt Moser singled up the middle and advanced to third as freshman DH Michael McLaughlin reached on a throwing error. Senior 1B James Howard scored Moser with a groundout to lead 1-0.
In the seventh, Howard started with a single and advanced to second on a sacrifice groundout from sophomore 2B Tom Petry. Following a strikeout, senior CF Connor McDavitt slapped a single to right-center to score Howard.
The Jumbos added an insurance run in the ninth off relief pitcher Mike LaBeau. Petry walked and advanced on a sacrifice from sophomore RF Harry Brown. McDavitt moved him to third with a groundout and junior LF Cody McCallum drove in Petry with an infield single.
McCallum topped Tufts at the plate going 3 for 5 with an rbi and McDavitt was 2 for 5 with an rbi for the lone multi-hit players.
Superko retired 10 in a row from the third through the top of the sixth and ended his debut outing retiring seven of the final nine batters he faced without a hit.
Tufts will return to action on Saturday at 1pm against Saint Vincent College at War Memorial Stadium.
