GREENSBORO, NC - Tufts University's Cody McCallum went 3 for 5 with five rbis to lead a 22-hit Tufts attack as the Jumbos defeated Guilford College, 20-7, Monday afternoon. Tufts is current receiving votes in the latest D3Baseball.com Top 25 Poll, 18 points outside the top 25.
The slugfest featured a combined 59 total base runners for both teams as the Jumbos (3-1). The Quakers produced 12 hits of their own while placing 18 runners on base. Tufts used big innings in the second, fifth, and seventh innings to produce the biggest bulk of the Jumbos' offense.
Tufts' Tommy O'Hara batted 2 for 5 with four rbis and a double while Bryan Egan added three more rbis and a double.
Lane Daniels and Herc Ingels totaled three hits a piece while driving in a run a piece for Guilford. Each batter hit a double in the contest. Nick Blackwood led the Quakers in rbis with two while batting 2 for 4 in the clean-up spot of the batting order. Blackwood started the Quakers' three-run rally in the bottom of the second inning with an rbi-single and repeated the feat two innings later.
Daniel Weygandt (1-1) took the loss for the Quakers in one-plus innings of work. Josh Bishop led the Quakers on the mound with two innings of relief, giving up one run on three hits while fanning two and walking two. Jake Watkins struck out four batters in two and two-thirds innings.
Freshman Sid Warrenbrand (1-0) took the win for Tufts, throwing three and one-third innings in relief of starter Willie Archibald, giving up two runs on six hits, striking out two, and walking one. Charlie McQuinn and Zach Brown combined to threw four two-hit innings with each striking out two batters.
Tufts continues its spring break trip tomorrow with a pair of games. The Jumbos are at Averett at 1:30 and then at Greensboro College for a 7 pm start. The Quakers finish up a stretch of four-games in three days tomorrow, traveling to Emory & Henry College for a 3 p.m. Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) contest.
