Baseball Earns Saturday Sweep with Late Rally to Win 9-5 at Apprentice

HAMPTON, VA - Visiting Tufts University put up four runs in the top of the ninth to pull out a 9-5 win over The Apprentice School on Saturday to sweep a doubleheader at War Memorial Stadium.

Nick Barker finished with two rbis for Tufts

Tufts put a pair of runs on the board in the top of the first as with one out Harry Brown singled and scored as Cody McCallum doubled down the left field line.  Tommy O'Hara followed with an infield single to third base and Bryan Egan was hit by a pitch to load the bases before Michael McLaughlin drew a walk to plate O'Hara for a 2-0 lead.

Apprentice School cut it in half with a run in the home half of the first as Brock Harris walked and stole second before moving to third on a groundout.  He scored as Ryan Hendrickson slapped a single to right field.

The Jumbos pushed the advantage to 5-1 with three runs in the third on a rbi single from Nick Barker, a fielder's choice by Boomer Saraga and a bases loaded walk to Brown.

In the home half of the third, the Builders scratched another run as Jacob Countiss started with a double and scored on a two-out single from Hendrickson.

The comeback started for the Builders in the seventh with a pair of runs.  Cody Norris started with a single and advanced to second on a wild pitch.  A walk to Countiss and a bunt single to Harris loaded the bases before Mark Labrador ripped a two-run single through the left side trimming it to 5-4.

Apprentice School tied it with a run in the bottom of the eighth as with one out Thomas Richardson drew a walk and went to second on a single to Norris.  A groundout moved both runners up before Countiss reached on an error that scored Richardson and tied the game.

In the ninth, the Jumbos broke loose for four runs as Matt Moser's two-run single put them ahead 7-5.  A passed ball plated the third run while Barker executed a suicide squeeze to score the fourth run.

O'Hara and Moser had two hits apiece for the Jumbos, while O'Hara scored three runs.  Moser and Barker drove in a pair apiece for Tufts who were coming off a 20-0 win over College of St. Joseph's (VT) in the second of three games at the stadium today.

Sperios Varinos took the win for the Jumbos throwing the last 2.2 innings allowing a run on a hit with two strikeouts.

Hendrickson and Norris had two hits apiece for the Builders, while Hendrickson and Labrador drove in a pair of runs apiece.  JP Anthony took the loss throwing one inning and allowing two hits and two runs.
