Box Score NORTHBOROUGH - Seven Tufts University pitchers combined on a five-hit shutout as the Jumbo baseball team opened the New England portion of its 2015 schedule with a 9-0 victory against Massachusetts Maritime Academy Wednesday afternoon at the New England Baseball Complex.

Tufts scored four times in the bottom of the first and then the pitching staff took care of the rest. Sophomore starter Charlie McQuinn stranded a Buccaneer runner on third in the first inning and Mass Martime would put a runner into scoring positon only one more time in the game.
McQuinn earned the win with two innings allowing two hits and no runs. Senior Willie Archibald covered the next two innings allowing two hits. Sophomore Rory Ziomek gave up a hit in his inning, but struck out two. Sophomore Matt Rothstein, senior tri-captain Tom Ryan, sophomore Speros Varinos and junior Matt Moser all pitched one inning of no-hit relief.
Mass Maritime junior starter Kevin Kwedor walked the bases loaded with two outs in the bottom of the first. Moser laced an opposite-field, ground-rule double scoring two. Junior DH Kevin Godin followed with a two-run single to right-center and Tufts led 4-0.
Jumbo freshman 3B Tommy O'Hara hit a one-out double down the left field line and scored the fifth Tufts run in the third inning on a single to right by senior catcher Bryan Egan.
Buccaneer sophomore reliever Daniel Avery entered in the third and was excellent until Tufts scored two against him in the sixth. Moser singled throught the left side with one out and scored on a two-out double to left-center by senior 1B James Howard. A well-struck ball by Tufts sophomore 2B Tom Petry glanced off the center fielder's glove for an error and Howard scored unearned making it 7-0.
The Jumbos added single runs in the eighth and ninth. Sophomore RF Harry Brown led off with a single to left in the eighth and went to third on two wild pitches. O'Hara's single up the middle brought him home. Howard hit a long double to left with two out in the eighth and scored on Petry's single up the middle.
Moser went 3 for 4 to lead Tufts' 11-hit attack. He scored twice and had two rbis. Howard had hits in both of his at-bats and scored twice after entering as a reserve. Brown scored twice and O'Hara finished 2 for 4.
No one in the Academy line-up had more than one hit. After senior SS Bobby Rosano led off the game with a single, stole second and went to third on a ground out, no Buccaneers touched second until the ninth. Pinch hitter Drew Tardif took second on a Tufts error, but did not advance.
Tufts begins NESCAC East play on Friday against Bowdoin with a pair of games at the New England Baseball Complex starting at 2 pm. Mass Maritime is scheduled to host Clark on Friday at 3:30.
