Black Runs Nation's Best Time in Outdoor 800 at Princeton's Larry Ellis Invitational

PRINCETON, NJ - Junior Mitchell Black of the Tufts men's outdoor track & field team ran NCAA Division III's fastest time in the 800 meters this spring at the annual Larry Ellis Invitational at Princeton University today.

Black's time of 1:50 flat was also a school record and placed 11th out of 98 runners in the event. It was the top time among DII and DIII competors at the meet. Six DI runnrers and four professionals were in front of him.

The time surpassed the 1:50.80 mark ran by Buffalo State's Austin Becker as the #1 time in the nation for Division III. Black broke his own school record of 1:50.13, which was set last season at the at the New England Intercollegiate Amateur Athletic Association Championship.

Black won the 2015 NCAA Division III Indoor Championship in the 800 meters with a 1:51.94 time on March 14 in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. He was the national runner-up outdoors last spring (1:51.30).

Classmate Veer Bhalla was expected to join Black in the 800 today, but was held out due to a nagging injury.
