WATERVILLE, ME - The Tufts Baseball team pulled within one divisional win of clinching a spot in the upcoming NESCAC Championship tournament by winning game two of a NESCAC East Double-header on Saturday at Colby College.
After falling 6-4 in the opener, the Jumbos exploded for a 15-3 victory over the Mules in the nightcap. The win improved Tufts to 6-3 in the NESCAC East and 21-6 overall. The win also gave the Jumbos a 2-1 series win over Colby. Tufts also has series victories against East rivals Bowdoin and Trinity this season. With one win next weekend at home against Bates, the Jumbos will secure a spot in the tournament.
Soren Hanson improved to 4-0 on the mound and did damage at the plate to help Colby College to the 6-4 win over Tufts in the first game of the doubleheader Saturday at Coombs Field. With the split, Colby moved to 15-8 overall and 4-5 in the NESCAC East.
Hanson continues to have a terrific season. He struck out six and walked one while throwing 96 pitches. Hanson also helped his own cause with two hits and four rbis. Jason Buco added two hits and two runs for the Mules, who scored all six runs in the first two innings. Dan Csaplar was 2 for 3 with an rbi, while Tommy Forese had one hit and scored twice.
Will Glazier had two hits and an rbi in the first game for Tufts. Connor McDavitt added two hits and one run.
Hanson smacked a two-run single to score Buco and Forese in the first inning for Colby.
In the second, Hanson added another two-run single to bring in Peter McAuliffe and Buco. Dan Csaplar had an rbi single to plate Forese. Tim Corey started the inning with a walk and scored the first run when McAuliffe reached by error.
Tufts loaded the bases in the third inning and got two runs. Oscar Kutch's rbi single brought in Tom Petry, who started the inning by getting hit by a pitch. Tommy O'Hara's sacrifice fly brought in McDavitt with the second run.
Glazier had an rbi single and Harry Brown a sacrifice fly to help the Jumbos score their final two runs in the fourth.
The second game was tied 2-2 after three innings, but the Jumbos scored 11 runs in innings four to six. Andrew David pitched a complete game with four strikeouts and two walks.
Bryan Egan had a pair of doubles among his three hits and drove in five runs for the Jumbos. O'Hara had three hits, three runs and three rbis. Brown finished with three hits and three runs, while Petry had two hits and scored three times.
Buco had a home run among his two hits and drove in two runs. Zach Ellenthal had one hit and scored a run.
The Jumbos play a Patriots Day double-header against UMass Dartmouth at Huskins Field on Monday starting at 1 pm. Up next for Colby is a Tuesday game at 4 pm at home versus Fisher.
