The Jumbos and Corsairs were scheduled to play a double-header, but rain forced the postponement of game two. Tufts improved to 22-6 overall and UMass-Dartmouth fell to 15-10.
Tufts scored three times in both the second and fourth innings before adding seven runs in the fifth. Senior 1B James Howard went 4 for 4 with three rbis and two runs scored, while senior DH Bryan Egan finished at 3 for 4 with his second home run, three rbis and three runs.
Senior pitcher Tom Ryan didn't need so much support, going all seven innings allowing four hits and one run with six strikeouts and a walk. He didn't allow a hit until two were out in the fifth and improved to 3-2 with the complete-game victory.
After going down 1-2-3 in the first, the Jumbos strung together four productive innings. Doubles by junior SS Matt Moser and sophomore 2B Tom Petry led to a three-run second inning, with Howard singling home a run and scoring in the frame as well.
After Howard's rbi double in the third made it 3-0, Tufts sent nine men to the plate and scored three more in the fourth. Moser and Howard had rbis and one of the Corsairs' four errors led to the other run. Egan's three-run home run was in the middle of Tufts' seven-run fifth inning during which they sent 13 men to the plate.
Senior CF Connor McDavitt added a 2 for 3 game with two rbis and a run at the top of the Tufts order. Sophomore RF Oscar Kutch went 2 for 4 with a run while Moser finished 2 for 5 with two runs and an rbi. Freshman 3B Tommy O'Hara scored three times.
UMass Dartmouth junior LF Connor Shaw had the first Corsair hit in the fifth with a soft single to center just out of the reach of Moser. The visitors scored their lone run in the sixth when senior SS George Agostini sliced a double to left and scored on a single to center by senior catcher Cory DeMedeiros. Shaw also had a single in the seventh to finish with two hits.
Sophomore Sean Callahan took the pitching loss for UMD. Classmate Ted Savage went 1.2 innings of no-hit, no-run relief for the Corsairs.
Tufts welcomes Bates to Huskins Field for a three-game NESCAC East series starting on Friday. UMass Dartmouth continues a busy week by hosting Little East Conference action against Rhode Island College tomorrow at 3:30.
