Beavers Stun Jumbos 3-0 in Tuesday Afternoon Field Hockey Action

Box Score
Dakota Sikes-Keilp unleashed eight shots, three of those on goal.

MEDFORD – The Babson field hockey team used goals from three different players to knock off No. 7 Tufts University at Bello Field on Tuesday afternoon.  The win snapped an 11 game winning streak for the Jumbos against the Beavers, and is the first Beaver win since 2003.

Tufts moves to 1-1 on the season and will look to regroup for a big upcoming NESCAC weekend.  Babson remains undefeated this season with a 5-0 mark.  The Jumbos are the third NESCAC team the Beavers have beaten this season, adding to wins over Connecticut College and Wesleyan.

The game was pretty even for the first fifteen minutes as both the Beavers and the Jumbos shared possession of the ball and looked to get something started.  It was the visitors who would strike first as Elizabeth Holmes was able to find Catherine Gilman amongst a bunch of people in front of the net, and Gilman snuck the ball past Jumbo sophomore keeper Libby DesRuisseaux into the right post to give the Beavers the 1-0 advantage just over 20 minutes into the game.

The first half ended with the Beavers ahead by one, but the Jumbos outshot the Beavers 7-3 in the first half, and had four penalty corners to the Beavers none in the first half.  DesRuisseaux had one save in the first half, while her Beaver counterpart, Kayla Costa, also had one save in the first frame.

The Beavers were able to pull away from the Jumbos after halftime. Just over 12 minutes into the second half the Beavers would make it 2-0 when Ashley Tango got her own rebound and knocked the ball past a diving DesRuisseaux for her team-leading sixth goal of the season.

Despite the Jumbos best efforts, they were not able to stop the Beavers, and about four minutes later the visitors added their third and final goal of the game.  After the Beavers drew a penalty corner, Julie Mortimer passed the ball to Victoria Spofford who netted her second goal of the season for a 3-0 advantage.

Senior Dakota Sikes-Keilp was able to unleash a couple of shots to try and put the Jumbos on the board off a couple of corners in the second half, but the Beavers defense, and Costa in goal, were strong and they were able to preserve the shutout.

Tufts outshot the Beavers, 18-13, and also held the advantage in corners, 7-5.  DesRuisseaux finished with eight saves, while Costa picked up her fifth win, and third shutout, of the season making seven saves.

The Jumbos will now have three days to prepare for Connecticut College and Trinity.  The Camels pay a visit to Medford on Saturday for a 12 pm contest, which will be followed by a 12 pm stint against Trinity on Sunday.  Babson begins conference play this weekend at they travel to Clark for a 12 pm contest on Saturday.
