MIDDLETOWN, Conn. – The No. 12 Tufts field hockey team scored once in each half but it wasn't enough as they fell to NESCAC rival and host Wesleyan on Tuesday night. Senior tri-captain Rachel Terveer and classmate Hannah Park were the goal scorers for the Jumbos.
Tufts moves to 5-2 on the season and 3-1 in NESCAC play, while Wesleyan is now 3-5 overall and 1-2 in conference play.
Senior Hannah Plappert scored a pair of goals on penalty corners in the first half, on passes from junior Lauren Yue, to spot home standing Wesleyan a 2-0 lead in field hockey action en route to a 3-2 victory.
The first one came with 30:18 left in the half, and the second just three minutes later at 27:05. Both were hard shots from near the top of the circle, the first low through traffic that went just inside the left post and the second that skipped into the middle of the cage. Plappert upped her seasonal goal total to five.
Tufts got one back with 4:59 left when Terveer took a shot from the top of the circle that was blocked. Sophomore Mary Travers sent the rebound toward the net and Park tucked it past Cardinal senior goalie Sara Grundy. It was the third marker of the year for Park.
Tufts outshot the Cardinals in the first half, 3-2, but Wesleyan led at intermission, 2-1.
Wesleyan took a 3-1 lead at 57:02 on the first goal of the season by sophomore Tierney Behles, who received a centering pass from Plappert and fired in a shot from the middle of the circle pass freshman goalie Emily Polinski.
The Jumbos responded just 52 second later to cut the margin to 3-2 as Terveer scored unassisted for her second seasonal goal.
Tufts generated 10 shots in the second period to just two by Wesleyan, but Grundy came up with two saves while the Jumbos shot wide seven times, including the final shot of the game off a penalty corner situation after time had expired. Grundy finished with three stops. Polinski had no saves in the contest.
Tufts entered the game ranked 12th nationally and had defeated Wesleyan 12 consecutive times dating back to 2005 when Wesleyan last downed the Jumbos.
Next up for Tufts is a matchup with nationally ranked Amherst (14th) Sat., Oct. 3 on the road. Wesleyan will be away from home as well, visiting Hamilton.
