CAMBRIDGE - Divers Matt Rohrer and Aaron Idelson both posted national qualifying marks today as the Tufts Men's Swimming & Diving team finished a busy week with a meet at MIT.
Roher's one-meter score of 288.90 and his three-meter score of 335.10, and Idelson's one-meter score of 292.80 were over the 275 qualifying mark in one-meter and the 285 standard in three-meter. The scores earned both Jumbo divers the right to compete at the NCAA Zone Championships at Wellesley College on February 26.
In the swimming events, Tufts had five runner-up finishes, including two by freshman stand-out Kingsley Bowen. He swam a time of 51.48 seconds in the 100 backstroke and had a 47.91 touch in the 100 freestyle. He was also the top Tufts finisher in the 100 butterfly (52.39).
Senior Cam Simko's 10:05.38 for the 1,000 freestyle was the Jumbos' first second-place performance of the day. They had three in the first five events. Sophomore Morgan Ciliv finished that run with his 1:00.11 in the 100 breaststroke.
Sophomore Zachary Wallace timed 1:57.99 in the 200 individual medley, the final swimming event, for second place.
The Jumbos had opened the meet with a 1:36.07 by senior Michael Winget, Ciliv, Bowen and sophomore Michael Brienza for third place in the 200 medley relay. Winget submitted a 1:56.07 in the 200 backstroke for third place, while Ciliv's 2:10.44 in the 200 breast was another good third-place time.
The 200 freestyle relay of Simko, freshman Ross Wood, sophomore Lorenzo Lau and Brienza finished the meet with a 1:29.47 time.
The final score of the meet was MIT 228, Tufts 72. The Jumbos fell to 4-2 in their dual meet season. MIT is the fifth-ranked team in the CollegeSwimming Division III Team Rankings. Tufts is 20th.
The Jumbos have their lone home meet of the season next Saturday against Wheaton College. It will be Seniors Day at Hamilton Pool.
