MEDFORD - In their first meet under new head coach Joel Williams, the Tufts Men's Track & Field Team hosted and won the Tufts Invitational on Saturday at the Gantcher Center.
The Jumbos won five events and totaled 175.50 team points to win the eight-team invitational. Second-place UMass Lowell scored 164 and third-place Worcester State came in at 146.50.
Freshmen won two events in their collegiate debuts. Josh Etkind went 44'0 1/2" (13.42) for first in the triple jump. The mark placed him among the national top 30. Nico Agosti ran 52.52 seconds in the 400 meters to win by three-tenths of a second.
The 4x400-meter relay featuring All-Americans Andrew DiMaiti, Francis Goins and Alex Kasemir along with junior Nick Usoff debuted with a 3:30.30 for another tight victory. DiMaiti also won the 600 meters with a 1:23.02 time.
Another returning All-American, senior Veer Bhalla, posted the other Tufts win with a 2:30.12 finish in the 1,000 meters. Tufts had four among the top seven in the event.
Sophomore Linus Gordon's 21'11" (6.68m) distance in the long jump for second place was a national top 40 mark. Senior tri-captain Atticus Swett also earned a spot on the national list with his 47'9 1/4" (14.56m) distance in the shot put.
The all-freshman 4x2 of Etkind, Anthony Kardonsky, Thomas Miller and Agosti also posted a runner-up finish with their 1:34.96 time. Etkind had a fourth in the 60-meter hurdles (8.90m) while first-year Matthew McDermott added a solid 9:07.32 for third in the 3,000 meters.
Senior Bryson Hoover-Hankerson was a tick off his own indoor 60-meters record with a 7.16 in the preliminaries. He ran 7.18 for seventh in the final. Goins recorded a 22.41 for fourth in the 200.
Tufts competes at Bowdoin next week.
