MEDFORD - The Tufts Men's Swimming & Diving team had the best marks in 19 of 20 events while competing in their final dual meet of the 2015-16 season against Wheaton College today.
It was also Seniors Day, as Tufts saluted its six members of the Class of 2016. Recognized in a ceremony during the meet were seniors Anthony DeBenedetto, Calvin Liang, Tyler Lueck, Cam Simko, Michael Winget and Harry Wood.
Winget led the Jumbo victory parade with three individual wins and a relay first. He timed 51.70 in the 100 backstroke, 24.52 in the 50 backstroke and 54.35 in the 100 individual medley for his three wins. Winget, sophomore Morgan Ciliv, freshman Kingsley Bowen and sophomore Michael Brienza teamed up to open the meet with a 1:34.83 win in the 200 medley relay.
The 200 medley relay time set a Hamilton Pool record. Winget's 24.13 leading off was a 50 backstroke pool record. His 51.70 in the 100 back was also a new pool mark.
Ciliv also recorded a pair of wins as well as his role with the victorious 200 medley relay. He touched in 59.16 for the 100 breaststroke and also led the field in the 50 breaststroke (27.38). Bowen's 51.71 to win the 100 butterfly was his season's best. Brienza also won the 50 freestyle in 22.28 seconds and was part of the first-place 200 freestyle relay which closed the meet.
Rounding into form after studying abroad last semester, junior diver Matt Rohrer won both events with scores that are at the top of NESCAC (not including this weekend's action). He earned a 330.90 in one-meter and 365.85 points in three-meter.
Simko and freshman Brandon Jinn both won two swimming events. Jinn took the 1,000 freestyle by 25 seconds with his 9:59.72 time. Simko followed that with a 1:45.26 in the next event - the 200 freestyle. Jinn later swam to a 50.67 win in the 100 freestyle and Simko added a 500 freestyle first (4:56.36).
DeBenedetto was one of four others who had solo victories for Tufts. His came in the 200 butterfly at 1:54.65. Sophomore James McElduff was the fastest in the 200 backstroke with a 2:02.34 time. Junior Jasper Du posted a 2:18.73 time to win the 200 breaststroke. Sophomore Zachary Wallace added a 4:13.53 win in the 400 individual medley and break the Hamilton Pool record.
Tufts closed the meet with a 1:29.62 time to win the 200 free relay. Junior David Amirkhanashvili led off followed by freshman Noah Cagley, Brienza and sophomore Lorenzo Lau.
The Jumbos swam the final five events as exhibitions resulting in a 198-136 victory over the Lyons.
Head coach Adam Hoyt's Jumbos swim at the Middlebury Invitational next Friday and Saturday (Jan. 29-30) before the championship season starts.
