Mitch Black broke his own school record in the 1000m Saturday |
BRUNWICK, Maine- Seniors Atticus Swett and Mitch Black each won events to propel the Tufts men's track and field team to third of eight teams at the Bowdoin Invitational on Saturday.
Swett had a very productive day in the circle, as he won the shot put with a toss of 49' 11 ¼" (15.22m) and also earned the victory in the weight throw with a distance of 49' 11 ¾" (15.23m). He was backed in the weight by sophomore Michael Paloian in third (46' 7 ½", 14.21m).
On the track, Black won the 1000 meters in a time of 2:27.92, which breaks his own school record of 2:28.24 set last year.
In the 3,000, junior Tim Nichols clocked a time of 8:34.79 for second place. That time ranks 13th nationally so far this season.
Sophomore Andrew DiMaiti's time of 50.18 in the 400 is the 11th fastest performance in the nation this season, and was good enough for second on Saturday. In the 60 meter hurdles, freshman Josh Etkind clocked a time of 8.55 for third.
In the field, freshman Ben Wallace cleared 14' 1 ¼" (4.30m) in the pole vault for second. Classmate Charles Pennington took fifth in the high jump with his leap over the bar at 6' 2" (1.88m).
In total, the Jumbos scored 82 points, only 7 behind runner-up Bowdoin's 89. MIT easily won the meet with 190 points. Merrimack and Southern Maine rounded out the top five with 67 and 59.5 points, respectively.
Next weekend, coach Joel Williams' team will compete at the John Thomas Invitational at Boston University and host the Tufts Stampede at the Gantcher Center.
