| Junior Mason Pulde made 33 saves for the Jumbos against Williams |
Williamstown, Mass.- The Williams College Ephs (12-4-1, 8-2-1 NESCAC) beat the Tufts University Jumbos (6-7-4, 2-6-3 NESCAC) 4-0 in Friday night NESCAC hockey action. Williams College goaltender, senior Noah Klag got his third shutout of his career.
The Ephs came out strong, taking the lead 2:45 into the first period. Junior Luke Stickel scored by taking the puck around the right side of the net and stuffing it past Jumbo netminder, junior Mason Pulde. Stickel was assisted by senior Zander Masucci.
As the period end came closer, the game was still a one goal game. The Tuft attackers put continual pressure on the Eph defense and goaltender senior Noah Klag. The Ephs stood strong and brushed off a couple of close calls.
The Ephs finished the period with a two goal lead after sophomore David Italiano scored at 15:38. Italiano, assisted by junior Tyler Young and freshman Roberto Cellini, picked up the puck from a faceoff and backhanded a shot into the top left corner.
Williams extended their lead to 3-0 at 12:30 off a Tufts penalty, served by sophomore Nick Flanagan for interference. Junior Tyler Young scored on the inside left post and was assisted by senior Greg Johnson and junior Frankie Mork.
Just under a minute later, 13:19 into the second, the Ephs scored again. This time senior Zander Masucci one-timed a crossing pass by junior Alex Haggerty into the top right corner after a two-on-one rush; he was also assisted by senior Matt Werner.
The second period ended with a Tuft penalty to freshman David Lackner after he slashed junior James McNamara who skated off the ice injured.
The third period saw no goals and only one penalty (Tuft junior Sean Kavanagh for roughing) during the last 20 seconds of the game. This win will put Williams first in the NESCAC rankings.
The Ephs will return home tomorrow for their game against Connecticut College at 3pm. The Jumbos will be back in action on Saturday with a 4 pm contest at Middlebury.
