MEDFORD - Junior Matt Rohrer and freshman Kingsley Bowen both won two events as the Tufts Men's Swimming & Diving team concluded its regular season at the Middlebury Invitational on Friday and Saturday.
Rohrer set season-highs for points in both diving events. He hit 507.5 in the one-meter competition and 463 in three-meter diving. Bowen's 50.95 in the 100 butterfly is his season-best in the event. He was just 0.04 off his season-best in the 200 backstroke with a 1:52.14 winning time.
This was the Jumbos' final meet prior to the NESCAC Championships coming up February 19-21 at Williams College. The Middlebury meet was not scored and featured all five relays among the schedule of events. Tufts competed against the host Panthers and Williams College.
Freshman David Nason's 53.47 won the 100 backstroke and led a plethora of Jumbos who stepped into the spotlight at this meet.
Freshman Brian Honicky had a strong swim in the 200 individual medley early in the meet with a 1:58.30 time to finish as runner-up. Classmate Chris Simotas follwed him with a 21.92 in the 50 freestyle for fourth place.
Sophomore Craig Drennan added another runner-up performance with his 4:15.33 in the 400 IM. He later recorded a 4:52.11 in the 500 freestyle for third place.
Late in the meet, junior Russell Weeks timed 2:13.53 in the 200 breaststroke for third place, and sophmore James McElduff touched in 1:58.12 for second place in the 200 butterfly.
The 200 freestyle relay led off the meet as Honicky, Simotas, sophomore Hazen Breen and junior David Amirkhanashvili combined on a 1:27.11 time that took third. The 200 medley relay - Nason, sophomore Morgan Ciliv, Amirkhanashvili and Breen - was second at 1:38.33. Tufts' first 400 freestyle relay of the season - freshman James Wu, sophomore Michael Brienza, senior Cam Simko and Simotas - were also runners-up (3:14.81).
