BOSTON - Senior tri-captain Mitchell Black and sophomore Andrew DiMaiti ran a pair of the nation's top times in competition at Boston Univeristy's John Thomas Terrier Classic on Saturday.
DiMaiti won his section in the 400 meters, defeating four others with a time of 49.15 seconds. That placed him 35th out of 152 total entrants. The meet includes Division I, II and III college teams, unattached competitors and professionals.
Later in the day, Black won his section in the mile with a 4:09.77 time. In a 12-man race, Black edged Syracuse's Joseph Kush at the finish line (4:09.87). Out of 212 total runners in the event, Black's time was 24th.
Due to the fast banked track at BU, both Jumbo times will be converted for NCAA qualifying consideration. Approximately 0.8 will be added to DiMaiti's 400 and around 3.25 seconds will be put on Black's mile. Official converted times will be released tonight or tomorrow. Either way, DiMaiti's run is on the cusp of the national top 10 and Black's has top five in the country potential.
Senior James Traester and junior Luke O'Connor also ran in the mile at BU for Tufts. Traester's 4:16.07 was 55th at the meet and O'Connor wasn't far behind in 4:18.90 for 62nd. Traester has a shot at a national top 25 mark with his converted time.
These four will join the rest of their teammates for Tufts' Cupid Challenge next Saturday at the Gantcher Center.
