GREENSBORO, NC – Joe Metts and Andrew Brann both had three hits and three rbis in Guilford College's 15-0 baseball win over Tufts University Monday afternoon at McBane Field. Josh Shepherd added four hits for the Quakers (12-11), who banged out 16 hits and scored in all but three innings.
Kevin Godin had two of Tufts' eight hits. Christian Zazzali and Tommy O'Hara both had a hit and a walk for Tufts. The Jumbos stranded 12 runners in the game and left the bases loaded in the sixth inning. They left two runners on in the seventh, eighth and ninth frames.
Nine different pitchers each tossed a scoreless frame in Guilford's second shutout of the season. Chase Mitchell (2-1), who retired Tufts in order and fanned two in the fifth, was credited with the win.
Metts delivered a three-run triple in Guilford's five-run first inning. The Quakers sent nine hitters to the plate and chased Jumbos' starter Rory Ziomek after seven batters.
Brann hit a two-run single in the Quakers' four-run second inning that opened a 9-0 margin. He led off the bottom of the fifth inning with a towering home run to right field, his second of the season and first at McBane.
Jacob Roberts also had three hits for Guilford. Teammates Michael Pinkston and A.J. Girting both knocked in a pair.
Coach Nick Black's Quakers host Roanoke College Tuesday at 3:00 pm in an Old Dominion Athletic Conference contest. The Jumbos play two tomorrow, at Averett in a 1:30 pm start and at Greensboro with a 7 pm start.
