Box Score DANVILLE, VA - Senior SS Matt Moser had eight runs batted in including a grand slam as the Tufts baseball team got back on track with an 18-7 win at Averett on Tuesday afternoon.
The Jumbos (3-2) finished with 15 hits including a 3 for 4 day with four runs scored, two rbis, two doubles and two walks by sophomore 3B Tommy O'Hara. Sophomore RF Harry Brown finished 3 for 6 with two rbis and a run, while freshman catcher Eric Schnepf was 2 for 4 with two rbis and a run. Christian Zazzali scored three times.
Junior starter Tim Superko was the beneficiary of the support. He went six innings allowing five hits and three earned runs for his first win of the season.
Down 1-0, Tufts rallied for five runs after two were out in the third. O'Hara hit an rbi double and after an Averett error extended the inning Moser smacked his grand slam to left putting Tufts ahead 5-1.
The Cougars, who got an rbi single from Corey Wall in the second, scored twice in the third inning to close within 5-3. Billy McLaughlin singled through the right side to score the second run of the frame.
However, the Jumbos would pile on six more runs in the fourth. A single by sophomore Christian Zazzali loaded the bases and O'Hara earned a walk for the first run. Sophomore DH Dan Kelly then cleared the sacks with a three-run double making it 9-3 Jumbos. Junior 2B Tom Petry and Brown had rbi singles later in the inning for an 11-3 Tufts advantage.
After Tufts loaded the bases without a hit in the fifth, Moser's two-run double made it 13-3 Jumbos. In the Averett fifth, Kyle Vidano walked, stole second and third, and scored on a double by Kyle Walsh.
A Moser sacrificle fly, an rbi single by Brown and a two-run double by Schnept gave Tufts a 17-4 lead in the seventh. Moser's eighth rbi of the game came on a fielder's choice supplying the final Tufts run in the eighth.
Vidano singled and stole two more bases in the Cougars' seventh, scoring on a sacrifice fly by Nic Futrell. After a Tufts error gave Averett a run in the eighth, the hosts scored three times in the ninth including a two-run single up the middle by Drew Evans. McLaughlin had a run-scoring double earlier in the ninth.
McLaughlin finished 3 for 5 with two rbis and two runs while Walsh was 2 for 5 with two rbis and a run for Averett. Evans as 2 for 4 with two rbis. The Cougars finished with 11 hits.
The Jumbos ravaged eight Averett pitchers. Junior James Culbreth took the loss.
Tufts plays again tonight, heading over to Greensboro College for a 7 pm start.
