NEW LONDON, CT - The 4x400-meter relay ran the nation's 10th-fastest time as the Tufts men's outdoor track & field team won the 17-team Silfen Invitational hosted by Connecticut College on Friday and Saturday.
The Jumbos' foursome of Nick Usoff, Andrew DiMaiti, Alex Kasemir, and Nico Agosti ran a 3:20.04 to win the 4x4 at the meet. The race featured 14 teams, mostly from Division III.
The Tufts outdoor 100 meters record was also broken on Saturday. Freshman Thomas Miller posted a time of 10.86 seconds that erased the 10.90 mark held by Daniel Lange Vagle (2013) and Phil Rotella (2009) in the Tufts record book. Miller was second in the race, leading a 2-3-4 finish for Tufts that scored 19 points in the event.
The Jumbos scored a ton of their 179 total team points in the sprints. They earned the top five spots and six of the eight scoring places in the 400 meters led by Mitchell Black's 49.85 time (a Jumbo season-best). They scored 35 points in the 400 alone. Tufts also had a 17-point total in the 200 meters led by second-place Peter Clark season-best 22.25.
Sophomore Stefan Duvivier launched himself into national contention by clearing 6'6" (1.98m) in the high jump. That's tied for 15th on the national list and he was second in the event.
Besides Black and the 4x400 relay, Tufts had wins by freshman Ben Wallace in the pole vault (season-best 13'11 1/4" - 4.25m), senior Atticus Swett in the shot put (season-best 47'5 3/4" - 14.47m), and the 4x100-meter relay (43.67). That foursome was Clark, senior Bryson Hoover-Hankerson, Miller, and freshman Brandon Levenstein.
Swett was also second in the discus throw with a season-best 139'0" (42.36m) mark. DiMaiti (50.24) and Usoff (50.47) were second and third respectively behind Black in the 400. Senior Michael Paloian was third in the hammer throw at 156'8 1/4" (47.75m) for a season-best, as was Usoff in the javelin throw with a 174'9" (53.26m) spiral, also a season-best. Clark also had a third in the 100 meters (10.91).
The Jumbos were 83.5 points in front of second-place Franklin Pierce (95.5). Trinity was third with a 81.5 score.
