Baseball Sweeps Double-header from UMass Dartmouth to Improve to 18-4

Box Score

MEDFORD - Senior Matt Moser drove home four runs and had a pitching victory as the Tufts baseball team won a pair of games against UMass-Dartmouth on Patriots Day at Huskins Field Monday. The scores were 9-5 and 13-8.

Tom Petry had four rbis in the two games

Moser's three-run double highlighted a nine-run fifth inning that provided all of Tufts' offense in the first game. Harry Brown hit a two-run home run in the third inning of the second game when the Jumbos scored six times.

Tufts, which has won five in a row and 14 of its last 15, improved to 18-4 overall. The Corsairs, who were led by Taylor Cacciola's three rbis and two runs scored in the twinbill, dropped to 10-15.

Cacciola's two-run home run in the top of the first gave UMass Dartmouth a 2-0 lead in the first game. They extended the margin to 5-0 by scoring three times in the fourth. DeVon King singled home a run and scored in the inning.

However, the Jumbos sent 14 men to the plate in the fifth. In addition to Moser's bases-clearing double, Stephan White and Oscar Kutch both singled home a run and scored, and Tom Petry had a two-run single in the inning. Brown and Dan Kelly both scored twice in the frame.

Joe Thomas, named NESCAC Player of the Week earlier in the day, started for Tufts and went five to earn the win. Andrew David finished the game with two perfect innings. Moser was 2 for 4 with three rbis and a run. Seven different Jumbos scored runs.

Steve Colella took the game one pitching loss for UMD. He had allowed just one hit through four innings before the Tufts fifth.

The Jumbos built a 7-2 lead in the second game with their sixth-run third. Besides Brown's home run, Kutch and Tommy O'Hara both doubled home a run and scored. Tufts homered and hit three doubles in the inning including one by Cody McCallum.

UMass Dartmouth battled all the back and then some in the fifth inning scoring six runs to take an 8-7 lead. Jose Vasquez, Brandon Polignone, Erick Ramirez, and King all had rbi singles. King had also singled and scored earlier in the inning.

Tufts got the lead right back with a pair of runs in the fifth on back-to-back singles by Petry and Harrison Frickman. They added four more in the sixth as Kelly had an rbi single and scored and McCallum brought home a run with a base knock.

Moser pitched the final 2.2 innings allowing four hits and no runs with three strikeouts to get the win. The Jumbos finished with 16 hits led by McCallum's three. Kutch was 2 for 4 with two rbis and a run, Nick Falkson scored four times while going 2 for 2, and Brown went 1 for 2 with two rbis and two runs.

The Corsairs added 14 hits as game two featured a total of 30. King went 3 for 5 with two runs and an rbi at the top. Mac Curran was 2 for 2 with two runs, Vasquez finished 2 for 4 with two rbis and a run, and Polignone went 3 for 4 with a run and an rbi. The Corsairs used six pitchers in the second game with Chase Hussey taking the loss.
