Rothstein Paves Way for Baseball's 8-1 Victory over Eastern Nazarene

Box Score

MEDFORD - Junior Matt Rothstein pitched seven strong innings as the Tufts baseball team won its 23rd game with an 8-1 non-conference victory over Eastern Nazarene College at Huskins Field Monday afternoon.

Matt Rothstein won in his first start of the season

Rothstein allowed four hits and one run with five strikeouts and a walk to earn his second victory of the year. He went six scoreless innings before allowing a run in the seventh. Sophomore Sid Warrenbrand finished up with two 1-2-3 innings of relief for the Jumbos.

Seniors Matt Moser and Kevin Godin both had a pair of rbis as Tufts improved to 23-5. Zach Zaino drove home the lone Lions run with a single in the seventh as ENC fell to 15-20.

Tufts scored in each of the first three innings to take a 5-0 lead. Moser singled and scored on a base hit by Mike McLaughlin in the first. Godin singled in the second, advanced to third on a wild pitch, and scored on a single by Tom Petry. Godin then hit a two-run double in a three-run third inning for the Jumbos. He also scored on a groundout by Cody McCallum.

Meanwhile, Rothstein retired the first six batters he faced before Nick Story doubled to lead off the Lions' third. However, he tried to take third on a ground ball to short and Moser threw to Tommy O'Hara for the out. ENC's Zachary Carmody led off the fifth with a single and Cameron Fiorentino followed with a walk. Rothstein prevented both from scoring with three straight outs.

Tufts pushed the lead to 8-0 in the sixth. After McCallum led off with a walk and Harry Brown doubled him to third, Moser hit a two-run double down the left-field line. He then scored on a fielder's choice by Stephan White.

Carmody was hit by a Rothstein pitch with one out in the seventh and took second on another HBP. He scored on Zaino's single to center breaking up the shutout.

Moser finished 2 for 4 with two rbis and a run for Tufts. O'Hara was 2 for 3 with a run and Godin went 2 for 3 with two runs and two rbis. Mike McLauglin also had two hits with a run and an rbi.

The Lions finished with just four hits. Starter Ryan Spina took the pitching loss. Xavier Faria was good in three innings of two-hit, no-run relief for Eastern Nazarene.

The Jumbos travel to Bowdoin for a three-game NESCAC East series starting on Friday at 3 pm. ENC plays at Lasell tomorrow at 7 pm.
