Box Score MEDFORD - Junior Matt Rothstein pitched seven strong innings as the Tufts baseball team won its 23rd game with an 8-1 non-conference victory over Eastern Nazarene College at Huskins Field Monday afternoon.
Rothstein allowed four hits and one run with five strikeouts and a walk to earn his second victory of the year. He went six scoreless innings before allowing a run in the seventh. Sophomore Sid Warrenbrand finished up with two 1-2-3 innings of relief for the Jumbos.
Seniors Matt Moser and Kevin Godin both had a pair of rbis as Tufts improved to 23-5. Zach Zaino drove home the lone Lions run with a single in the seventh as ENC fell to 15-20.
Tufts scored in each of the first three innings to take a 5-0 lead. Moser singled and scored on a base hit by Mike McLaughlin in the first. Godin singled in the second, advanced to third on a wild pitch, and scored on a single by Tom Petry. Godin then hit a two-run double in a three-run third inning for the Jumbos. He also scored on a groundout by Cody McCallum.
Meanwhile, Rothstein retired the first six batters he faced before Nick Story doubled to lead off the Lions' third. However, he tried to take third on a ground ball to short and Moser threw to Tommy O'Hara for the out. ENC's Zachary Carmody led off the fifth with a single and Cameron Fiorentino followed with a walk. Rothstein prevented both from scoring with three straight outs.
Tufts pushed the lead to 8-0 in the sixth. After McCallum led off with a walk and Harry Brown doubled him to third, Moser hit a two-run double down the left-field line. He then scored on a fielder's choice by Stephan White.
Carmody was hit by a Rothstein pitch with one out in the seventh and took second on another HBP. He scored on Zaino's single to center breaking up the shutout.
Moser finished 2 for 4 with two rbis and a run for Tufts. O'Hara was 2 for 3 with a run and Godin went 2 for 3 with two runs and two rbis. Mike McLauglin also had two hits with a run and an rbi.
The Lions finished with just four hits. Starter Ryan Spina took the pitching loss. Xavier Faria was good in three innings of two-hit, no-run relief for Eastern Nazarene.
The Jumbos travel to Bowdoin for a three-game NESCAC East series starting on Friday at 3 pm. ENC plays at Lasell tomorrow at 7 pm.
