Matt D'Anieri won his first collegiate race in the 800

HARTFORD, Conn. - Six Jumbos won races as the Tufts University men's outdoor track & field team finished its regular season at the Trinity College Invitational on Saturday.

Senior Tim Nichols was first in the 5,000 meters with a 14:28.96 finish, the 15th-best time in Division III this season as of 9 p.m. Saturday night. He won the race by nearly a minute, as second-place finisher Ben Fiedler from Amherst College came along in 15:19.84.

Sophomore Anthony Kardonsky won the 100-meter dash at Trinity. After qualifying in 11.31 seconds, he ran 11.07 in the final to win. It was his second victory in as many weeks including the 200 (22.52) at the Sunshine Classic hosted by Tufts last Saturday.

Tufts had five of the top seven finishers in the 800 meter run, in which 24 runners completed the race in all. Freshman Matt D'Anieri earned the first win of his young career with a 1:56.80 finish. Classmate Roman Lovell was second (1:58.46) and sophomore Hiroto Watanabe (1:58.76) ran third.

Jumbos won both hurdles events. Sophomore Josh Etkind was first in the preliminaries at 15.02 and then cruised to a 15.26 victory in the final. Senior tri-captain Nick Usoff had a 54.88 time for first place in the 400-meter hurdles. That is a top 30 mark in DIII.

Sophomore James Gregoire topped a small 3,000-meter steeplechase field with a 10:06.51 finish, while sophomore Henry Hintermeister took second with a 164'0" (50.00m) javelin throw. Junior Linus Gordon reached 41'1 3/4" (12.54m) to tie for second place in the long jump.

Sophomore Christian Swenson clocked in at 4:06.67 for third place in the 1,500 meters. Other thirds were posted by junior Nile Abularrage in the pole vault (11'11 3/4" - 3.65m) and freshman Kevin Quisumbing in the shot put (46'7 1/2" - 14.21m).

The Jumbos will travel to Bowdoin College for the New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) Championships next Saturday.
