Nichols Wins 5K at Men's Track & Field Open New England's with School Record Time

Josh Etkind had the third-best qualifying mark in the 110 hurdles

WILLIAMSTOWN - Tufts University senior Tim Nichols won the 5,000 meter run in a school record time on the first day of the New England Intercollegiate Amateur Athletic Association Championships hosted by Williams College on Friday.

Against Division I, II and III competition from around the region, Nichols ran a 14:12.63 time to win the 29-man race. He was seventh-tenths of a second ahead of Dartmouth College's Julian Heniger (14:13.33). Ranked 20th nationally in the 5K with a 14:28.96 entering the meet, Nichols improved to #4 in DIII with this new time. It erased a 14:17.10 mark by Jesse Faller in 2010 from the Jumbo record book.

With the 10 team points scored by Nichols, Tufts was fifth as a team through five events.

The Jumbos also qualified for the finals in three events on Friday. Sophomore Josh Etkind was third in the preliminaries of the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 14.50 seconds. It was the top Division III time in the heats. The final is on Saturday at 1:40 p.m. Jumbo sophomore Henry Hintermeister was 20th in the event (15.51).

In the 100 meters, senior Blake Coolidge qualified seventh with a 10.81 time. He is one of two DIII qualifiers for the final, which will be held on Saturday at 2:10 p.m. Two other Jumbos were in the field as freshman Robert Jones placed 24th (11.04) and sophomore Tommy Miller was 30th (11.22).

Junior Andrew DiMaiti won his heat in the 400-meter hurdles to qualify for Saturday's final (2:50 p.m.). His preliminary time of 53.17 was fourth overall. Like Coolidge, he is one of two DIII competitors in the final. Senior co-captain Nick Usoff just missed joining him. His 53.62 qualifying time was ninth, one spot out of qualifying for the final. However, it did improve upon his season-best mark. He's now ranked 18th nationally as of Friday evening at 9:30 p.m.

Sophomore Anthony Kardonsky also narrowly missed qualifying for the 200 meters final. He was second in his heat by 0.003 with a 21.884 time. Southern Connecticut's Tikuan Johnson finished in 21.881 and took a spot in the finals as the winner of the heat.

The meet resumes on Saturday at 10 a.m.
