GENEVA, Ohio - In an exciting high jump competition at the 2017 NCAA Division III Men's Outdoor Track & Field Championships, Tufts University junior Stefan Duvivier placed third to earn the first All-American award of his career on Friday.
With four contestants still remaining, Duvivier was the only one to clear 6'10 3/4" (2.10m) on his first attempt. The other three all missed on their first two attempts, but all three then made their third and final attempt to advance the bar to 6'11 3/4" (2.13m). Duvivier missed on all three of his attempts at that height, while Worcester State's Justin Lewis and George Fox's Jacoby Wolfe were both successful. That placed Duvivier third.
The All-American honor is the first for Duvivier, who finished 10th in the event for Tufts at the NCAA Indoor Championships in March. His third-place finish today scored six points for the Jumbos.
Worcester State's Lewis and George Fox's Wolfe battled for the national championship, with Wolfe succeeding on his first attempt at 7'1" (2.16m) to win.
Including the five points scored by senior Tim Nichols' fourth-place in the 10,000 meters (30:05.99) on Thursday, the Jumbos now have 11 team points overall at the 2017 Outdoor Championships. That places head coach Joel Williams' team seventh overall with seven events scored. The final day of the championships on Saturday begins at 10:30 a.m.
Also on Friday, Jumbo sophomore Josh Etkind qualified for the finals in the 110-meter hurdles. His preliminary time of 14.50 was third in his heat and seventh-best among the nine qualifiers. The time matched his second-best for the year, just 0.04 off his 14.46 school-record that qualified him for the NCAA meet. The 110 hurdles final is Saturday at 1 p.m.
In addition to Etkind in the 110 hurdles final on Saturday, the Jumbos have sophomore Christian Swenson running in the 1,500 meters final at 12:35 p.m., and Nichols entered in the 5,000 meters straight final at 3:25 p.m.
