No. 2 Field Hockey Defeats No. 12 Trinity on Sunday at Ounjian Field, 3-1

Box Score

MEDFORD - The No. 2 Tufts field hockey team continued to roll through NESCAC play with a 3-1 victory over No. 12 Trinity on Sunday at Ounjian Field, improving their conference record to 3-0.

Gigi Tutoni scored her third goal of the season for the Jumbos

The win lifted the Jumbos' overall record to 3-1 while the visiting Bantams fell to 1-3 on the season (0-3 NESCAC).

Tufts came out to a hot start yet again, taking an early lead just four minutes into the game on a goal from Gigi Tutoni. The goal came off of a corner when Marguerite Salamone inserted the ball to Celia Lewis who passed it to Tutoni, who was then able to get a clean shot off and send it past the goalie for her third goal of the season.

The Jumbos' offense was able to produce two corners in a minute span, the second of which resulted in their second goal of the game. After the insert from Salamone, the Jumbos passed the ball extremely well around the circle until it ended up back in Salamone's possession. She sent the ball towards the net and Hanaa Malik was able to put a stick on it and deflect it in for her second goal of the season, putting Tufts up 2-0.

Senior Mary Travers scored the third goal of the game for the Jumbos coming off an incredible diving play where she was able to tip it in on a pass from Malik for her third goal of the season, putting the Jumbos up 3-0.

With just two minutes to play in the first half, the Bantams had a scoring opportunity after a shot that was saved by Tufts goalie, Emily Polinski, pulled her out of the goal giving Kendall Brown an open-net scoring opportunity that was denied on an incredible defensive save by Jumbo Erin Sanders to preserve a Tufts 3-0 lead heading into halftime.

In the 49th minute Trinity was awarded a penalty stroke after a lot of commotion in front of the net. Senior Kelcie Finn took the shot for the Bantams and was able to get it past Polinski for their first goal of the game cutting the Tufts lead to two.

The Jumbos finished with the advantage in shots (19-12) and penalty corners (9-3). Both Trinity goalie, Lori Berger, and Tufts' Polinski made eight saves.

It was hard for the Bantams to get anything past Polinski as she made diving save after diving save in order to preserve the 3-1 lead.

The Jumbos will play again on Wednesday when they travel to non-conference opponent MIT for a 6 p.m. start time. Trinity will return to play next Saturday, a conference game, at Colby with an 11 a.m. start time.
