The Cardinals are now 2-5 overall this season and 0-3 in the NESCAC. With the win, the Jumbos improve to 5-2 overall and 4-0 in league play.
Tufts controlled the tempo for the majority of the game and after just over 16 minutes of scoreless action, the Jumbos got on the board when Marguerite Salamone found Brigid Gliwa off a penalty corner, and Gliwa lifted the ball over Wesleyan goalie Delaney Wood's outstretched arms for the score, the sophomore's first career goal. The goal was the only one of the first half and Tufts took the 1-0 lead into halftime.
At the 56:36 mark, the Jumbos added their second goal of the day when Mary Kate Patton connected with Mary Travers for what would essentially be the game-winning goal. Travers' goal was her fourth of the season.
Just over five minutes later, Tufts put the game out of reach as freshman Beth Krikorian found the back of the net for her first career goal, coming off an assist from Hanaa Malik, putting the Jumbos up 3-0.
Wesleyan cut the deficit to two at the 66:27 mark when Tierney Behles scored her first goal of the season as she snuck one into the bottom left corner of the net through a crowded defense, but the margin was too difficult to overcome. Erica Horowitz assisted on the play.
Tufts finished the game with the advantage in shots (33-2) and penalty corners (15-1). Wesleyan goalie Delaney Wood was able to keep the game close for a while as she recorded nine saves on 12 shots on goal. Junior goalie Emily Polinski had one save on two shots on goal for the Jumbos.
The Cardinals return to action Saturday, with another match-up against a nationally-ranked top-10 team, as they head to No. 9 Hamilton. The game is scheduled to start at 11 am. The Jumbos will be back in action on Saturday when they are set to travel to Amherst in another conference match-up. The game is scheduled to start at 12 pm.
