Nugnes Shuts Out Amherst as Hockey Takes 4-0 NESCAC Victory

Box Score

MALDEN - Senior co-captain Nik Nugnes made 33 saves as the Tufts University men's hockey team earned its first NESCAC win of the season with a 4-0 shutout of Amherst College on Saturday night at Valley Forum.

Freshman Charley Borek had a goal and assist

The shutout was the third of Nugnes' career at Tufts. Ironically, the University of Maine transfer was in goal when the Jumbos blanked Amherst also by a 4-0 score last February 10 at home, when he had 27 saves. That was the Jumbos' last shutout victory over a NESCAC team.

Tufts matched the most goals scored against the Mammoths this season with their four tonight, led by a goal and an assist each from senior Brian Brown and freshman Charley Borek.

The Jumbos improved to 2-9-2 overall and 1-5-1 in the confernece. It was their first victory since a 9-3 final over King's College at the WSYB/Catamount Radio Invitational hosted by Castleton on November 25, ending a 0-6-1 drought. Amherst lost its second straight and fourth in the last five games, dropping to 5-5-3 overall and 3-2-3 in NESCAC. The Mammoths had lost just once in their first eight games of the season.

The visitors had the better of the play in the first period, but Nugnes stopped all 12 Amherst shots on net. The Jumbos capitalized on a late Mammoth penalty as Brown scored for the third straight game on the power play at 19:15 of the period. It was the fourth consecutive Tufts goal scored by Brown, including two against Endicott at home on Tuesday night and one versus Endicott at Plattsburgh's tournament last Saturday.

Borek, who had assisted on Brown's extra-man goal, pushed the Jumbo lead to 2-0 just two minutes into the second period. Tufts' first-line then combined to give the hosts a 3-0 advantage as sophomore Tyler Scroggins scored at 15:17 of the second period with assists to freshman Andrew Hadley and Brown. Nugnes stopped 10 shots in the middle stanza.

Amherst continued to hold a slight advantage in offensive opportunities throughout the third, finishing the game with a  33-23 margin in shots. However, Nugnes wrapped up his shutout with 11 third-period stops. Sophomore Anthony Farinacci capped the scoring for the Jumbos with his second goal at 12:32 of the third for the 4-0 final.

Making his first NESCAC start for Amherst this season, sophomore goalie Giancarlo Ventre finished with 19 saves. Sophomore Joey Lupo and junior John Festa both earned seven face-off wins for the Mammoths. Sophomore Patrick Daly and Greg Krisberg put six shots on goal each.

Tufts won at the face-off dot 36 out of 61 times, including a 9-4 night by freshman Edward Hannon. Tufts had five players finish with +2 ratings.

The Jumbos will look to continue their momentum tomorrow afternoon when they host Hamilton College in a NESCAC game at 4 p.m. Amherst continues its weekend with a conference game at Connecticut College on Sunday at 3 p.m.
