MEDFORD, Mass. – The Tufts University men's swimming and diving team defeated Wheaton College in a dual-meet match today, 180-112.
The Jumbos claimed first place in 10 events, while in eight of those, they not only took the top spot, but had all top three finishes.
Four Jumbos were tied for the most first place finishes. Lorenzo Lau, Costantino Camerano, Kingsley Bowen, and James McElduff all finshed with two top finishes each.
Lau's came in the 200 medley relay along with Matthew Manfre, Camerano, and Noah Zhang (1:37.32, 11 points) and the 100 backstroke (54.99, 9 points). In the relay, a team of Zachary Wallace, Scott Simposon, McElduff, and Michael Birenza took second, while Roger Gu, Alexander Burnam, Bowne, and Noah Cagley took third. And in the 100 backstroke, Wallace again took second place and Tyler Tatro came in third.
Camerano came in first in the 200 medley relay and in the 50 freestyle (22.44, 9 points). Albert Tseng and Zhang took second and third in the 50 freestyle.
Bowen came in first in the 200 freestyle (1:46.66, 9 points), with Neil Spazzarini and John Lalime taking second and third respectively, and in the 200 backstroke (1:54.33, 9 points).
McElduff, the final Jumbo with two first place finishes, got his in the 200 butterfly (1:54.89, 9 points, with Trevor Serman and Dawson Stout getting second and third, and in the 500 freestyle (4:51.50, 9 points) as Alexander Burnam and Cagley came in second and third.
In the 1000 freestyle, Nathan Mitchell came in first (10:21.65, 9 points) with Ross Wood and Craig Drennan in second and third. Roger Gu (45.62, 9 points), Lau, and John Koster took first through third respectively in the 100 freestyle. And Kuan Lee placed first in the 200 breaststroke (2:14.02, 9 points).
The first place team finish was wrapped up before the end of the event, so the Jumbos competed in the last few events without competing for places.
Wallace had the fastest time in the 100 butterfly (51.77), Simpson in the 200 IM (2:03.04), and a team of Gu, Ryan Luu, Camerano, and Tim Gronet in the 400 freestyle relay (3:12.60).
The Jumbos are in action next in two weeks on Feb. 2 and 3 when they travel to the Middlebury Invitational.
