Kardonsky's Two Wins Lead Men's Track & Field at Bowdoin Meet

Hiroto Watanabe won the 800 at Bowdoin

BRUNSWICK, ME - Junior Anthony Kardonsky earned a pair of sprint victories as Jumbo men's track & field competitors won six events overall at the Bowdoin Invitational #2 on Saturday. The Jumbos finished second in team scoring with 132 points, behind only MIT (174.50).

Kardonsky continued a great start to his 2018 season. He won the 60-meter dash today in 7.01 seconds, taking fractions of a second off the 7.03 he ran at home last weekend. He also took first in the 200 meters at Bowdoin with a 22.27 mark that was three-tenths of a seconds faster than his non-converted winning time last week (27.55). Kardonsky was also a part of today's 4x4 that ran a strong 3:26.57 time.

Senior co-captain Drew DiMaiti dominated the 600 meters this afternoon with a 1:21.63 winning time, almost three seconds in front of second-place finisher John Kenneally from Bowdoin (1:24.40). DiMaiti was part of the Jumbo 4x4 as well, along with freshman Vincent Avallone and senior Patrick Milne.

Junior Hiroto Watanabe followed suit in the 800, recording a 1:54.51 winning time as Jumbos won four of the six shorter running events at the top of the results sheet. Classmate Josh Etkind was first in the 60-meter hurdles for the second week in a row, this time recording a mark of 8.41 seconds.

Matthew Manteiga became the second Jumbo freshman to win the long jump in as many weeks, joining classmate Michael Mecha. Manteiga's 22-2 1/2 (6.77m) won today after Mecha's 22-0 3/4 (6.72m) was tops at the Tufts Invitational a week ago.

Junior Ben Wallace led several Jumbo runner-up efforts today. He was second in the pole vault, clearing 14-5 1/4 (4.40m). Other seconds came from senior Tom DePalma in the 1,000 meter run (2:34 flat), senior Stefan Duvivier in the high jump (6-6 / 1.98m) and sophomore Kevin Quisumbing in the shot put at 49-8 1/2 (15.15m).

Tufts was ahead of the host Polar Bears (100), Division II Merrimack (88) and Southern Maine (61.50) in the team scoring.

Updated Jumbo national rankings will be added to this release as soon as they are available.

Tufts hosts the Branwen Smith-King Invitational at the Gantcher Center next Saturday, named in honor of the recently retired Tufts women's coach and athletic administrator.
