Baseball Opens NESCAC East Series at Bowdoin with 10-0 Victory

BRUNSWICK, Maine – Junior starter R.J. Hall and senior reliever Kevin Galasso combined on a two-hit shutout as the Tufts University baseball team opened a NESCAC East Division series at Bowdoin College on Friday afternoon with a 10-0 victory.

Tommy O'Hara hit a grand slam in the third inning

Senior 3B Tommy O'Hara led Tufts offensively by going 2 for 3 with a grand slam, a double, four runs batted in and two runs scored. The Jumbos improved to 11-9 overall and evened up at 2-2 in the division.

Bowdoin, which lost its fourth straight, dropped to 9-11 overall and 3-4 in the NESCAC East.

Hall improved to 3-2 allowing one hit and three walks with seven strikeouts in seven innings. He held the Polar Bears hitless through three innings until Eric Mah led off the fourth with a double. Mah moved to third with one out, but Hall got a pop-up and a ground out to leave him there.

By that time, Tufts already led 5-0. O'Hara hit his grand slam in the third inning scoring Harrison Frickman, Christian Zazzali and Elias Varinos, who were all hit by pitches. The Jumbos added a run in the fourth as junior Casey Santos-Ocampo hit a one-out single and scored on a single to right by Zazzali.

The Jumbos doubled their led to 10-0 with five runs in the top of the ninth. O'Hara's one-out double sparked the rally. He scored on a single to left by freshman Will Burgess. Consecutive singles by Santos-Ocampo, Frickman and junior Will Shackelford brought home runs, with Shackelford's scoring two.

Galasso retired six of the seven men he faced in relief.

Shackelford was 2 for 4 with the two rbis as Tufts had 10 hits overall. Frickman scored twice.

Max Vogel-Freedman took the loss for Bowdoin allowing five hits and five runs with six K's in 6.1 innings.

The teams are scheduled to play a double-header on Saturday at Pickard Field starting at noon.
