HARTFORD – Senior Stephan Duvivier won his third conference title, junior Josh Etkind his second and junior Henry Hintermeister his first as the Tufts University men's outdoor track & field team placed third at the 2018 New England Small College Athletic Conference Championships hosted by Trinity College today.
The Jumbos accumulated 137 team points, just three off second-place finisher Williams College at 140. Middlebury became the first team other than Williams, Tufts or Bates to win NESCAC's since 1989 with their 172 score. Bowdoin was fourth at 110.
Duvivier won his third consecutive NESCAC crown in the high jump with a best mark of 6'8" (2.03m). It's his outdoor season-best and ranks 20th nationally as of 7:45 p.m. Saturday night. Etkind broke his own NESCAC meet record in the 110-meter hurdles with a winning time of 14.52 seconds today. He originally set the record with last year's 14.53 to win. Today's 14.52 is #11 nationally.
Hintermeister unleashed a 198'4" (60.45m) school record to win the javelin throw by almost 30 feet. The distance is #11 on the national performance list and busted the previous Jumbo mark of 197'11" (60.33m) set by Mark Stonkus 22 years ago in 1996.
Junior Colin Raposo ran the nation's 12th-best time in the 1,500 meters with a runner-up 3:52.98 time. Senior co-captain Drew DiMaiti was the runner up in the 400-meter hurdles in 54.24 seconds. The Jumbos had five second-place efforts overall, including freshman Matthew Manteiga in the long jump (22'6 ¼" – 6.86m) and sophomore Kevin Quisumbing in the shot put (50'1 ¼" – 15.27m). The 4x1 relay foursome of junior Brandon Levenstein, junior Anthony Kardonsky, junior Tommy Miller and sophomore Robert Jones also put together a second-place mark of 42.34 seconds.
DiMaiti also scored fourth in the 400 meters with a time of 48.71 seconds, then ran the third leg with the 4x400-meter relay that was fourth. He was joined by sophomore Jordan Abate, freshman Vincent Avallone and junior Thomas Doyle for a 3:21.76 time. The 4x8 had another relay fourth as sophomore Dylan McEniry, freshman Aiden Lewis, sophomore Matt D'Anieri and junior Hiroto Watanabe ran 7:54.94.
Led by Manteiga, the Jumbos had four score in the long jump to combine for 16 points. Duvivier popped a 21'11 ¾" (6.70m) for fourth place, senior Linus Gordon was seventh in 21'4 ¾" (6.52m) and freshman Michael Mecha went 21'2 ¾" (6.47m) for eighth. Mecha and junior James Gregoire teamed up in the triple jump for fourth and sixth place, respectively. Mecha had a 45'1" (13.74m) and Gregoire a 43'1 ½" (13.14m).
Ten Jumbo points were scored in the 100 meters by Kardonsky, Jones and Miller. They were fourth (10.84), sixth (10.96) and eighth (11.04), respectively. Sophomore Billy Witrock was seventh (55.50) to back up DiMaiti in the 400 hurdles for 10 points there.
Junior Ben Wallace in the pole vault (14'11" – 4.53m) scored fourth-place points. Junior Brian Reaney's 15:14.08 in the 5,000 was fifth.
The Jumbo throwers totaled 29 points. Freshman Dylan Daisey in the shot had a 45'1" (13.74m) for fifth place and 12 team points in the event with Quisumbing. In the discus, sophomore Christian Trebisacci's 136'10" (41.70m) was fifth and Daisey's 129'6" (39.48m) was eighth.
Adding key depth points were Quisumbing in the hammer throw, where his 149'4" (45.51m) was seventh, while Junior Charles Pennington added a seventh-place in the high jump, clearing 6'0" (1.83m). Miller in the 200 (22.22 for eighth), D'Anieri in the 800 (1:53.79 for eighth) and junior Dylan Jones in the 10K (31:36.98 for eighth) also scored.
The Jumbos compete at the New England Division III Championships hosted by MIT next weekend.
