SPRINGFIELD – Senior Matt D'Anieri won the mile run to lead the Tufts University men's indoor track & field team on the second day of the 2020 New England Division III Championships held at Springfield College on Saturday.
D'Anieri edged Williams College's Nick Gannon at the finish line, with the Jumbo timing a 4:14.43 PR and the Eph coming across in a 4:14.61 time. D'Anieri's mark is ranked 12th for Division III nationally as of 7:15 pm Saturday night. He is Tufts' first-ever mile champion at the New England D3 indoor meet, which has contested the event since 2006. D'Anieri also scored third in the 1,000 meters on Saturday with a 2:31.34 effort.
The Jumbos had three runner-up performances at today's championship. Sophomore Nick Delaney was ahead of D'Anieri in the 1,000 and placed second with a 2:31.20 finish. Freshman Andrii Campbell put down a 1:22.10 for second in the 600, while the 800-meter run saw Jumbo freshman Evan Ensslin place second with a 1:54.50 race.
Sophomore Ben Stein and freshman Carter Rosewell posted national top 30 scores in the heptathlon, which had its final three events on Saturday. Stein's 4,656 points was a personal best and ranked 20th nationally. He posted a 2:45.13 time in the 1,000 meters that won the race and scored 817 points. Rosewell accumulated 4,475 points for seventh place and a #28 national ranking.
The Jumbo 4x800-meters relay of Delaney, sophomore Collin O'Sullivan, senior co-captain Danny Klain and Ensslin combined on an 8:01.87 that took fifth-place. The Jumbos added an eighth in the 4x4 (3:26.22) featuring senior co-captain Billy Witrock, sophomore Sam Oomen-Lochtefeld, freshman Marcus Hardy and Campbell. Hardy's 1:23.99 in the 600 also was an eighth-place mark.
Tufts had 16 points in the 1,000 meters overall including senior Dylan McEniry with a career-best 2:34.07 for seventh place. Junior OJ Armstrong scored seventh in the 200 meters (22.92), and he narrowly missed adding another point in the 400 where he was ninth in 51.18 seconds. Freshman Willy White made the 60-meter hurdles final out of the 22-man preliminaries and placed seventh (8.52 seconds). Junior Dylan Daisey also contributed seventh-place scoring in the weight throw with a 52'6" (16.00m) PR. Junior Matt Manteiga was just outside of a scoring spot with his 22'1 ¾" (6.75m) long jump.
Tufts tallied 67.5 total points to place third in the meet. They finished behind New England champion MIT (150) and runner-up Williams College (104).
The Jumbos host the Tufts National Qualifying Meet at the Gantcher Center next Saturday.
