MEDFORD – Senior Matt D'Anieri of the Tufts University men's indoor track & field team improved his season-best time in the 800 meters at the Tufts National Qualifying Meet held at the Gantcher Center today.
D'Anieri won the 800 with a 1:52.66 time that ranked third in Division III nationally as of 6:15 pm Saturday night, putting him in a good position to qualify for NCAA's. The finish was 1.53 seconds quicker than his previous nationally-ranked time, which was a 1:54.19 converted mark from the Boston University David Hemery Valentine Invitational that was ranked 19th.
The Jumbo 4x4 ran a season-best 3:20.61 time today, though they are on the bubble for NCAA's. The Tufts foursome was junior OJ Armstrong, sophomore Riley Patten, sophomore Sam Oomen-Lochtefeld and freshman Andrii Campbell. They were ranked 22nd early Saturday evening. Tufts was previously not in the national top 50 for the 4x4.
Junior co-captain Harry Steinberg ran an 8:34.24 PR in the 3,000 meters today, but at #40 nationally it will not qualify for the national championship meet.
The field for the 2020 NCAA Division III Indoor Championships in Winston-Salem, North Carolina next weekend (Mar. 13-14) will be officially announced tomorrow. The individual events take 20 qualifiers and the relays 12.
The Tufts distance medley relay of sophomore Nick Delaney, Campbell, freshman Evan Ensslin and D'Anieri has a strong chance with their 10:00.29 qualifying time from earlier in the year. They are ranked third nationally. D'Anieri in the mile (4:14.43) and Ensslin in the 800 (1:54.19) were 15th and 20th, respectively, in the nation entering the weekend.
