Field Hockey Wins 6-0 Over Connecticut College

Box Score

Gillian Roeca NEW LONDON, Conn. - The Jumbos faced off against NESCAC opponent Connecticut College Monday night in their second-to-last regular season game of the year. Both sides entered the match following a win in their prior competitions. Tufts (12-2, 8-1 NESCAC) came out hot and didn't let off the gas, defeating the Camels (2-12, 0-9) by the score of 6-0.

Right off the bat the 'Bos layed on the pressure winning three penalty corners in the first five minutes before senior forward Gillian Roeca (pictured) was able to take control of the ball and score Tufts' first goal with over nine minutes remaining in the first period. Just a minute and a half later after a forced turnover, a shot by Beth Krikorian was saved, but only as far as to freshman Kylie Rosenquest who put home the Jumbos' second goal of the game.

Tufts poured on three more shots over the rest of the first, all of which Connecticut College senior goalie Jackie Mountford was ready for, recording three of her six first-period saves in short order.

The second period told a much different story as the Camels came out aggressive winning their first corner and holding down their half on defense allowing zero goals.

Riding high on her performance late in the first period, Mountford was outstanding in the second recording eight more saves. None was bigger than a penalty shot by Rosenquest that she stopped early in the second period.

Jumbo head coach Tina Mattera must've had a brilliant halftime speech as Tufts came out of intermission with Sophie Schoeni scoring three minutes into the second half. The game broke open with Roeca's second of the night off Schoeni's fourth assist of the year. Only nine seconds later Roeca completed the hat trick pushing the lead to 5-0 with 10 minutes left in the third period.

Connecticut continued to fight as they were able to record their first shot of the game alongside two more corners in the third aiming to slowly pick away at the Tufts lead.

Minutes into the fourth period Tufts' Rachel Scrivanich found herself on a break-away and took the unselfish play passing it wide to Rosenquest who lifted a beautiful shot over the goalie and into the net for her second and the Jumbos' sixth.

Both sides fought back and forth for the remainder of the final period to no avail as the game finished off 6-0.

The Jumbos had a 32-4 advantage in shots overall and 17-6 in corners. Mountford finished with 16 saves while Jumbos Andie Stallman (0 saves) and Sam Gibby (two saves) combined on another shutout.

The Jumbos play their final game of the regular season 7 PM Wednesday at 10th-ranked Bowdoin College, while the Camels close out their season at Wesleyan on the same night.
