MEDFORD – One of eight Jumbos honored on Seniors Day this afternoon, Gillian Roeca (pictured) scored twice to lead the third-ranked Tufts University field hockey team to a 4-0 victory against Hamilton College in NESCAC action Sunday at Ounjian Field.
The Jumbos remained undefeated in the league at 4-0 while improving to 6-1 overall. Hamilton, who had won three of their last four, fell to 6-3 and 3-3 NESCAC.
Roeca's first goal came in the aftermath of a Tufts corner. A shot by Jumbo Beth Krikorian had been saved by Hamilton defender Maeve Eskandari. The Continentals couldn't clear their zone and Roeca dribbled past four Hamilton defenders and rolled a shot past keeper Maggie Reville for a 1-0 Tufts advantage.
Five minutes into the second quarter, Jumbo junior Reegan McCluskey intercepted a Hamilton pass and sent it towards Roeca in the circle. A Hamilton defender knocked it off Roeca's stick, but it went to Beth Krikorian who then sent it right back to a wide-open Roeca. She one-timed it for her second of the game and a 2-0 Tufts advantage.
Hamilton would earn a corner late in the half, but a shot by Hannah Dillon was deflected high by the Jumbo defense.
The Jumbos peppered Reville with six shots in the third period, but the Hamilton goalie made four saves. However, she wasn't able to stop a great individual effort by Jumbo senior Claire Foley. She took the ball from the left sideline and dribbled into the circle, then spun and fired a shot that deflected off Reville's foot and in for a 3-0 Tufts margin with five minutes remaining in the third.
Hamilton had its best quarter in the fourth, including a shot by Emma Liebegott that was saved early on. Alana King and Dillon also both tipped shots wide. It would be Tufts though that finished off its one-goal-each-quarter afternoon on a corner with McCluskey blasting in a shot off Melissa Manzello's insert.
Reville finished with five saves in the Hamilton goal. Junior Sam Gibby was one of three Jumbo goalies who played, but was the only one to make any stops with two.
Roeca was joined by Foley, Krikorian, Manzello, Sophie Schoeni, Emma Smith, Andie Stallman and Marin Waddington as Jumbos who were honored in a pre-game ceremony.
