MALDEN – The Tufts University hockey team fell to the Trinity College Bantams by a score of 6-4 on Saturday at Valley Forum in Malden, Massachusetts.
Trinity started hot, scoring two goals right out of the gates and three in the first period. The first came just 2:05 into the game on a power play when sophomore forward Jax Murray received a pass from fellow sophomore John Campomenosi on the right side of the ice and fired a wrist shot into the left side of the net. Trinity did not wait long to score their second, as it came just 52 seconds later. Sophomore Casey Rhodes scored after a shot from senior Connor Sundquist ricocheted off Tufts goalie Josh Sarlo onto his stick.
Later in the period, Sarlo made a great diving save with the glove, robbing Trinity of a goal after it seemed to be an open-net shot. The Bantams would score a third first-period goal a little under 12 minutes into the game when Rhodes had the puck by himself in the Jumbos' zone and left a pass for first-year defenseman Eamon Doherty who collected it and fired the puck past Sarlo to make the score 3-0.
The Jumbos came out of the locker room in the second period with a vengeance, creating many opportunities to score and eventually finding the back of the net just over five minutes into the period. Sophomore defenseman Sam Miller scored his first career goal for Tufts on a deep wrist shot that deflected off a defender and past Trinity goalie Patrick Pugliese. Senior Angus Scott (pictured) assisted the goal.
The two teams would trade goals for the rest of the period with Rhodes scoring again just three minutes later for Trinity with Sundquist assisting him again. Tufts answered that with a goal from Scott with just under seven minutes left in the period. Scott put a slow wrist shot on net and it found its way to the back of the net making it a 4-2 game.
Four minutes later, Trinity sophomore Kyle Tomaso scored a shorthanded goal on a breakaway, making a last-second move on Sarlo to his left and finishing it. Tufts senior forward Cal LeClair socred a powerplay goal just 15 seconds later when freshman Marek Pechr sent a quick pass that LeClair collected and shot past Pugliese to make the score 5-3 heading into the third period.
Once again, Tufts started the period dominating the possession of the puck and creating chances. Just over five minutes into the period freshman Sami Hakkareinen scored his first career goal when he put a shot on net from the left corner that found its way behind Pugliese to cut the Trinity lead to just one with 15 minutes left in the game. After a five-minute roughing penalty committed by Tufts later in the period, Trinity sealed their 6-4 victory with a power play goal from senior forward Lucas Michaud on a rebound from a saved Murray shot.
Trinity led the Jumbos in shots 40-31 and both teams had five power play opportunities with Tufts scoring on one and the Bantams scoring on two. Sarlo finished the game with 33 saves on 39 shots while Pugliese saved 27 of 31 shots.
The Jumbos will now travel to Babson on Tuesday, November 23 for a 7 PM start.
