Babson Holds Off Hockey in Local Non-League Action 7-5

Box Score

BABSON PARK - Tufts University's Justin Brandt scored short-handed six minutes into the third period to tie the score at 3-3, but host Babson College was able to come away with a 7-5 victory over the Jumbos in non-league men's hockey action on Tuesday night.

Brandt scored twice for Tufts, and Angus Scott and Tom Tresca (pictured) both finished with a goal and two assists. Making his collegiate debut, freshman goalie Ryan Welch made 51 saves in goal for the Jumbos.

The Beavers were led by two goals and two assists from Ryan Black and a pair of goals by Mike Egan.

Tufts got out on top when defenseman Gunnar Stadem sent a long outlet pass to Scott at the Beaver blue line. The big Jumbo forward warded off a defenseman deep into the Babson zone and sent a one-handed pass to Brendan Skarda out front, who went to his backhand and scored at 11:15 of the first.

Babson's Matt Wiesner took advantage of a pass that bounced off the boards past a pair of Jumbo and Beaver players onto his stick in Tufts' zone and he scored tying the game at 1-1 with under four minutes remaining in the first.

Babson would then get the next two and led 3-1 on goals by Egan and Cam Schmitt in the first nine minutes of period two.

Tufts fought back, first with Brandt and Scott working a give-and-go for a power-play goal at 9:41 of the second period. Then came the shorty that tied the score in the third, with Mason Kohn forcing a turnover in the Babson end and Brandt collecting the puck and scoring to tie the game at 3-3.

However, goals by Black and Thomas Kramer returned the Beaver lead to two goals at 5-3 with nine minutes left in regulation. Nice work on the power play by Brandt and Kohn helped set up Scott in the slot for a Jumbo goal at 13:56 that cut the margin to 5-4.

Another goal by Egan at 16:01 cushioned the Babson lead to 6-4. Then with the goaltender pulled Tresca scored on a blast from the left point with 18 seconds left and Tufts was within 6-5. The Jumbos got possession on the ensuing face-off, but Babson broke up the rush and Black scored into an empty net ending it. The teams combined for seven goals in the third period.

The host Beavers finished with a wide 58-25 advantage in shots. Tufts continued to play well on special teams, keeping Babson to 0 for 5 on power plays, scoring 2 for 3 with the extra man themselves and also adding the short-handed tally.

Kohn won 15 of 21 faceoffs for the Jumbos and Kramer's nine wins led the hosts. Aidan Murphy made 20 saves in the Babson goal for the victory.

Tufts travels to the Baltimore area to play a pair of games at Stevenson University on Friday and Saturday.
