Box Score

Justin Brandt REISTERSTOWN, Md. - Senior Justin Brandt (pictured) scored twice, including his second short-handed goal in as many games, but the Tufts hockey team lost 5-2 at Stevenson University on Friday night.

Tonight was the first of two games for Tufts against a Stevenson team that was receiving votes in the U.S. College Hockey Online poll this week. The teams will meet again tomorrow at 4:30 pm in at Reisterstown, Maryland.

The Jumbos got into a deficit early tonight as Stevenson scored the first four goals of the game in the first period. The host Mustangs got it started with a goal just 12 seconds into the play, earning a quick face-off in the Tufts zone and Anthony Starzi scoring on a rebound.

Power-play goals by Austin Master and Liam McCanney just 37 seconds apart extended the Stevenson lead to 3-0 halfway into the opening stanza. Luke Benitez then tallied at 11:40 and the hosts had a four-goal advantage.

Tufts got on the scoreboard before the first period ended during a power play. The Jumbos circled the puck around to defenseman Tom Tresca, whose shot from the left point rebounded to Brandt along the goal line on the right side. He converted from the difficult angle at 15:12 pulling the Jumbos within 4-1.

The teams played a scoreless second period as Tufts was able to keep the margin at three heading into the final frame. Peyton Durand, making his Tufts debut in goal, stopped all 13 Stevenson shots in the second.

Mustang Frank Vitucci made it 5-1 almost five minutes into the third period with a shot from the top right of the left face-off circle.

With Tufts down a man 12 minutes into the third, Mason Kohn connected on a pass from the Jumbo zone to Brandt near the red line and he broke in and beat Stevenson goalie Ryan Kenny for his second goal of the game and fourth of the season.

Master netted his second of the game on a Stevenson power play with less than three minutes to go in regulation for the 6-2 final.
